Requirements
  • At least one year of specialized litigation experience reviewing legal documents, retrieving and assembling information for hearings or trials, researching legal sources, maintaining file systems, and using automated software to produce legal-related reports, documents, correspondence, and related materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Hands-on familiarity with office applications including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat is required.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Security Clearance is required.
Responsibilities
  • Receive and review incoming material and independently determine the need for assembling and preparing legal documents, including charging instruments, motions, orders, pleadings, deposition notices, trial subpoenas, and grand jury subpoenas.
  • Proofread and edit drafts of legal documents, including motions, orders, correspondence, discovery requests and responses, and other pleadings, ensuring compliance with applicable style and formatting rules.
  • Electronically file documents with appropriate state or federal courts at the direction of attorneys, applying knowledge of local court rules and practices.
  • Assist with trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks and witness and exhibit lists.
  • Prepare and track grand jury subpoenas and returns; process and organize legal data and supporting materials; copy and assemble records for court filings.
  • Compose original letters involving legal procedures and specialized terminology, including transmittal letters, extension requests, case-development notices, and notices to defense counsel.
  • Perform ancillary office support functions requiring knowledge of United States Attorneys programs and operations.
  • Open, update, and close cases using an automated case-tracking system and search databases for required information.
  • Obligate funds for litigation expenses and monitor their continued necessity.
  • Review bills and invoices and submit them to the budget office for payment.
  • Maintain calendars for active cases and attorneys; track filing, hearing, trial, conference, interview, and other deadlines; maintain suspense systems and provide reminders.
  • Assemble physical and electronic files for new cases, including chronological filing, conflict-of-interest sheets, numbering case materials and discovery, and distributing additional discovery as directed.
  • Prepare case files for closing by organizing documents chronologically, verifying required contents, and preparing closing sheets for attorney signature.
  • Receive visitors, answer and route telephone calls, take messages, deliver and retrieve papers from the federal courthouse, provide information about matters and procedures, and determine appropriate referral and urgency.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Produce written documents and materials using office software and databases, including integrated tables, charts, and graphs for legal documents and courtroom presentations.
  • Provide automated litigation assistance for trial preparation and courtroom presentations, including transcribing dictation, scanning, plotting, preparing trial visuals, enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
