Requirements
- Graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing is required for nurse practitioners.
- National certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center is required for nurse practitioners.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required for nurse practitioners.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required for nurse practitioners, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- At least 1 year of endocrinology experience is required for nurse practitioners.
- An American Heart Association Advanced Life Support certification is required for physician assistants, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- A Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required for physician assistants.
- Graduation from an ARC-PA-approved physician assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- At least 1 year of endocrinology experience is required for physician assistants.
- The employee must be able to provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the applicable professional licensing or certification authority and hospital privileges.
- The employee must be able to use computers proficiently.
- The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for endocrinology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization, immediately after discharge, and in ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds and consultations, including pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated patient assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with endocrinology faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results in accordance with established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized endocrinology care plans that include teaching, discharge planning, ambulatory management, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum permitted by the employee’s education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex endocrinology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate endocrinology patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use clinical equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning and responds to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for endocrinology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document each patient’s care plan, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Lead the development and implementation of changes in endocrinology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to endocrinology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review endocrinology data from patient registries and clinical and financial reports, including length of stay, access to care, and cost per case, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist endocrinology faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
- Three to five years of endocrinology experience is preferred.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioners are preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
