Uber to acquire Berlin-based chauffeur hailing app to ramp up its luxury travel efforts. The Blacklane announcement comes a few weeks after Uber revealed its Elite program. Contributing reporter Mon, March 30, 2026 at 9:38 AM PDT Uber has acquired Blacklane, a Berlin-based startup that offers chauffeur services and bookings through its app, with plans to expand further into the luxury travel industry. Blacklane, founded in 2011, acts as a liaison between independent local chauffeur services and travelers looking for a more premium ride. According to Uber, the deal is subject to regulatory approvals but is expected to close by the end of 2026. "This partnership marks a significant milestone in Blacklane's next chapter and is a powerful step-change in introducing our service to new markets globally," Jens Wohltorf, founder and CEO of Blacklane said in a press release. Uber didn't disclose the acquisition details and it's not clear if Uber Elite and Blacklane will compete against each other. Currently, Blacklane is available in at least 500 cities across more than 60 countries. Besides on-demand chauffeur hailing, the startup offers long-distance rides from city to city, airport pickup with flight tracking, and by-the-hour bookings. Uber's acquisition of Blacklane comes several weeks after it launched Uber Elite as an invite-only service for its "luxury ride experience." Besides Uber Elite and Blacklane, another luxury hailing service has recently entered the US market. Earlier this month, Wheely announced its US debut with New York City as its first location, with five others to be announced in the coming years. Blacklane also currently operates in New York City, along with several dozen other cities in the US.
Wheely expands on-demand chauffeur service to New York City. By PYMNTS | March 23, 2026 Wheely, a luxury services company that provides chauffeuring and concierge services through its app, has expanded to New York City, according to its website. The London-headquartered on-demand chauffeur company already operates in London, Paris and Dubai, per the site. "As a global hub of culture and business, New York City holds a natural place within our global presence," the company said in its announcement of the expansion. "Designed for the city, passengers can choose from First or Business SUV classes, each offering repeated excellence, discretion and absolute reliability, to meet the rhythm of the great city with quiet assurance." Wheely focuses exclusively on business elites and high-net worth individuals and differentiates itself in part by having drivers wear a suit and tie, sign nondisclosure agreements, and complete three days of training inspired by five-star hotels' hospitality training, Bloomberg reported Monday (March 23), citing its interview with Wheely CEO Anton Chirkunov. Please add us to your preferred sources list so our news, data and interviews show up in your feed. Thanks! The drivers are independent contractors, and the vehicles are sourced from the drivers or fleet companies, the report said. Wheely's expansion to New York City marks its U.S. debut, and the firm plans to expand in North America "significantly over the next five years," according to the report. The company is eyeing Texas, Washington, D.C., Miami and Palm Beach, per the report. According to company posts on X, some of Wheely's latest services added over the past five months include support for private aviation in its automatic flight-tracking feature, which enables users to simply enter the tail number of their flight to have a chauffeur waiting when they land; a gift card that is hand-delivered in a bespoke box and can be redeemed for Wheely services; and a Boarding Pass Scan feature that enables users to simply scan their boarding pass to have the flight details autofilled and have a chauffeur waiting when they arrive. Rideshare companies Uber and Lyft recently announced their own moves in the luxury space. Uber announced March 12 that it introduced a new luxury ride experience called Uber Elite that is available on an invite-only basis for customers in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The company said Uber Elite will soon expand to New York City and other U.S. and international cities. Lyft said in October 2025 that it acquired luxury chauffeuring firm TBR Global Chauffeuring, which operates in more than 3,000 cities in 120 countries.
Wheely, a luxury ride-hailing app, has launched in New York City, marking its US debut and presenting competition to Uber Technologies and Lyft. The move comes as established ride-hailing companies have been increasing efforts to attract executives and wealthy consumers. The expansion represents Wheely's entry into the American market, targeting high-end clientele in one of the country's most competitive urban transportation markets.
Wheely extends flight-tracking service to private aviation. By Web Team 5th March 2026 2 Mins Read Chauffeur service Wheely has launched a flight-tracking feature for private aviation passengers, allowing users to receive timed airport pickups based on live tail number monitoring. The service, available across London, Paris and Dubai, extends the company's existing commercial flight-tracking offering to FBO and private terminal arrivals. Passengers enter their aircraft tail number in the Wheely app, and once the flight plan is filed, the system tracks the aircraft in real time and adjusts the chauffeur's arrival accordingly. The platform also accounts for diversions and landings at alternative airports, rerouting chauffeurs as needed. Where FBO access permits, chauffeurs wait planeside; otherwise they meet passengers inside the private terminal. "We've extended the same flight-tracking capabilities we perfected for commercial travel to private jets, so whether you're landing at a commercial terminal or touching down privately at Farnborough, your chauffeur will always be there at exactly the right moment," said Anton Chirkunov, CEO and founder of Wheely. Unlike commercial flights, private aviation presents logistical challenges for ground transport coordination. Flight plans are often confirmed only hours before departure, and FBO access frequently requires prior permission. Wheely said its chauffeurs are trained in FBO procedures and can manage prior permission required (PPR) details on behalf of passengers. The company completed thousands of private aviation pickups last year across airports including Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Luton, Le Bourget and dedicated private terminals in Dubai. Wheely is a Swiss-founded, London-headquartered chauffeur and concierge service that has operated for more than 15 years.
Wheely, a luxury-focused competitor to Uber, is launching in Dubai as it looks to rev up international expansion efforts that were quashed by Covid in 2020.
