Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in railroad construction.
  • Extensive experience supervising and managing railroad tie gang operations.
  • Must qualify in track inspection as required by the Federal Railroad Administration.
  • Knowledge of track construction and maintenance, including track, turnout and crossing construction, tie and rail replacement, track surfacing, and thermite welding.
  • Previous project supervision experience.
  • Ability to train and motivate workers.
  • Ability to read and understand project-specific documents, schedules, standard railway plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to oversee others’ work and clearly communicate instructions to the crew.
  • Strong client-relations skills.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions for the work performed.
  • Ability to understand and expertly carry out instructions.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare production reports, timesheets, equipment logs, inspection reports, change orders, and updated project files.
  • Ability to perform administrative and project-based duties as assigned.
  • Must be willing to travel 90–100% of the time.
  • Basic computer and mobile-device proficiency.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Responsibilities
  • Plan work activities with the Project Manager to develop means and methods, including safety action plans.
  • Review contracts, project documentation, and plans to ensure field work follows the most recent specifications.
  • Plan day-to-day operations and ensure labor, tools, equipment, and materials are available for timely project completion.
  • Take responsibility for crew performance, safety audits, company goals, and compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Plan, schedule, and manage crews of 20–25 employees, including foremen, operators, and laborers.
  • Initiate follow-up actions, including training, orientation, and discipline.
  • Supervise work in compliance with Federal Railroad Administration track-safety standards and Roadway Worker Safety Rules.
  • Conduct daily crew briefings covering production goals, performance feedback, safety, schedules, hazards, and worker feedback.
  • Model, educate, and enforce safe work practices and company policies.
  • Ensure field personnel have and use proper safety equipment.
  • Communicate with customers and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure crew timesheets are properly submitted.
  • Unload and spread ties, spikes, and associated on-track material.
  • Replace ties and switch timbers according to owner markings and project specifications.
  • Gauge track in tie-replacement areas according to owner direction and contract specifications.
  • Coordinate crew members’ schedules and site arrival times.
  • Arrange hotel rooms for crew members.
  • Fuel machines before each shift and as necessary.
  • Ensure operators complete required walk-around forms for roadway maintenance machines.
  • Ensure equipment is operated properly to mitigate damage.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance with the mechanic.
  • Communicate with contractors and subcontractors to coordinate work and goals.
Desired Qualifications
  • A valid commercial driver’s license and medical card are preferred.
