Requirements
- An Associate's degree in Nursing is required.
- A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred and must be obtained within 8 years of hire.
- A licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required by completion of core orientation.
- Critical care or Advanced Life Support and other unit-specific certifications may be required for some Registered Nurses.
- Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
- The nurse must be able to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment to establish an appropriate plan of action.
- The nurse must communicate constantly both verbally, in writing, and electronically.
- The role requires sustained alertness and concentration while operating a personal computer or cathode-ray terminal for 40 to 70 percent of the time.
- The role requires regularly lifting bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or exerting equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling materials, equipment, and other objects.
Responsibilities
- Manage care delivery for patients throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge.
- Use the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation, and evaluation.
- Coordinate care provided by other professionals.
- Delegate selected acts, tasks, or functions within the scope of professional nursing practice and the abilities of patient care assistants and universal service assistants.
- Provide selected physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice based on the patient's acuity and complexity of care.
- Document and communicate the patient's response to care, resource consumption, and anticipated needs during each tour of duty.
- Collect comprehensive data pertinent to patients' health or situations, assess physical and developmental needs, analyze assessment data, document nursing histories and age-appropriate physical and emotional needs, and review vital signs for deviations from normal.
- Analyze assessment data to determine patient problems, confirm problems with patients and families when appropriate, and document expected outcomes and plans of care.
- Identify individualized expected outcomes using patient and family input, values, ethical and cultural considerations, and coordinate discharge planning.
- Develop individualized plans prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes and incorporate clinical pathways and input from the patient and healthcare team.
- Implement appropriate interventions, administer prescribed medication and treatment in accordance with approved nursing techniques and policies, use evidence-based interventions, maintain patient comfort and safety, initiate patient education, and coordinate implementation of the education plan.
- Manage patient care plans by organizing and delegating interventions and evaluating the effectiveness of care provided by self and others.
- Evaluate planned interventions and patient responses toward expected outcomes and document those responses.
- Participate in quality-improvement activities and use their results to initiate changes in nursing practice.
- Participate in ongoing educational activities, maintain professional competency records, and engage in professional development.
- Provide age-appropriate, culturally and ethnically sensitive care; participate in self-evaluation and systematic peer review as appropriate.
- Share knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues and contribute to a supportive professional work environment.
- Collaborate with patients, families, and multiple health disciplines to generate positive patient and family outcomes.
- Protect patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights; provide patient advocacy and relationship-centered care.
- Use research to improve patient health and the practice environment, including participating in data collection, research committees, and evidence-based policy and procedure development as appropriate.
- Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and condition, potential harm, activity complexity, problem-solving requirements, predictability of outcomes, and patient interaction.
- Assist patients and families in becoming informed consumers regarding treatment and care options, costs, risks, and benefits.
- Provide leadership in the professional practice setting by participating in nursing councils and committees, attending at least 50% of unit staff meetings, and maintaining a healthy professional environment.
- For scrub Registered Nurse duties, interpret procedure cards, assess case carts, obtain missing supplies, anticipate physicians' needs, monitor patient-condition changes, update case information, ensure proper equipment and instrument use, anticipate operative-field and surgical-team needs, support circulators, perform rotating after-hours call, and perform scrub duties across multiple services.
- Complete the annual Workday swing-bed computer-based learning module and understand the documentation and care differences for swing-bed patients.
- Cover shifts at Bronson LakeView Hospital and/or Bronson South Haven Hospital when approved to work in a swing-bed facility, depending on patient acuity and staffing needs.
