Evercore lifts Netflix target to $110, sees 41% upside as streaming stock tumbles

Evercore ISI analyst Kutgun Maral raised his Netflix price target to $110 from $100 on 14 September, maintaining an Outperform rating. With shares trading near $78, the target implies roughly 41% gains. The upgrade follows Evercore's 58th quarterly US subscriber survey, which found Netflix's household penetration climbed to 63%, a multi-year high. Japan penetration hit a record 22%, with subscribers showing stronger intent to stay. Live sports drove much improvement. Netflix users watching live sports increased to 60% in September from 42% in March. In Japan, 45% of new subscribers signed up because of the World Baseball Classic promotion. Netflix's second-quarter revenue reached $12.56 billion, up 13.37% year over year.

'La Bola Negra' kicks off Reeling film festival, representing a 'sea change' in mainstream regard of LGBTQ+ film fests.

'La Bola Negra' kicks off Reeling film festival, representing a 'sea change' in mainstream regard of LGBTQ+ film fests. In past years, Reeling founder and executive director Brenda Webb would lobby Hollywood studios for months to screen a new gay or lesbian feature in Reeling with no luck. The booking of the likely Oscar contender in this year's fest is "unprecedented in so many ways," Webb said. Sept 16, 2026, 8:18am PDT Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival opens Thursday with the Cannes-saluted "La Bola Negra." Oscar buzz is in the air. It's also the first major gay film in the 44-year-old event's history, after a decades-long quest by organizers to showcase high-profile queer stories. The nearly three-hour passionate panorama, which links three gay men in stories set before, during and after Spain's Civil War, was written and directed by two gay men and stars three gay actors - rare for a big release. A gay-themed manuscript by Federico Garcia Lorca, a Spanish poet and playwright executed in that war, figures in the plot. He is played by a gay Madrid playwright and performance artist. "This is unprecedented in so many ways," Reeling founder and executive director Brenda Webb said in a Zoom interview. "An epic queer love story - those don't come along very often." In past years she would lobby Hollywood studios for months to screen a new gay or lesbian feature in Reeling with no luck. "Brokeback Mountain" was a nope. Webb did get "Bros," "Bent," "Stonewall" and "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe." "When we have gotten them, they've not come easy to us," she said. Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival. When: Sept. 17-27 Where: Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave.; Landmark Century Centre Cinema, 2828 N. Clark St.; and Chicago Filmmakers Firehouse Cinema, 1326 W. Hollywood Ave. Tickets: $15 Booking "La Bola Negra" culminates a "sea change" in mainstream regard of Reeling and other LGBTQ+ fests, said Webb. "Part of the difficulty is that if a distributor had a gay film, one of the reasons they didn't want it to be an LGBTQ film festival was because they didn't want it to be labeled 'gay,' even if it was gay. It's almost like they tried to keep it a secret, right? It was a gay film, but it was kept closeted by distributors who were afraid it would limit the audience if they had called it a queer film or put it in a queer film festival." Over time, gay and lesbian fests demonstrated there was a large audience, gay and straight. "Netflix, I think, sees the queer audience as key to the success of this film," she noted. Netflix picked Reeling for the local launch of "La Bola Negra." Ticket-holders at the sold-out Music Box Theater screening on Thursday will get a first look at the likely Oscar contender. The Spanish-made subtitled film comes back to the Music Box for a 35mm theatrical run next month. Netflix releases "La Bola Negra" in select theaters on Oct. 16 but does not start streaming the film until Dec. 2. Variety reports that "47-day exclusive window [is] the widest theatrical commitment the company has given one of its titles to date." "La Bola Negra" premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where co-directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo were jointly named Best Director. The longtime collaborators co-wrote the screenplay with Spanish playwright Alberto Conejero. "We wanted it to be a big movie to assert that LGBTQ+ stories can be big - that they don't have to appeal to just a niche audience," Calvo told the Madrid newspaper El Pais. "Let's give all the straight people the war movie they want, but let's give our community the love story that they want," he told the audience at the Telluride Film Festival last week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Touted by Chicago Filmmakers as "the second-longest-running LGBTQ+ film festival in the world," Reeling was founded in 1981 with the goal of giving Chicago's LGBTQ+ community the stories they wanted but were not getting from Hollywood. This year's fest will screen 36 narrative and documentary features and 59 shorts from 22 countries at three venues from Sept. 17-27. The nonprofit Chicago Filmmakers, now based in Edgewater, was originally located at 6 W. Hubbard St. when Webb began the festival. The 90-seat storefront theater showed 16mm shorts by experimental filmmakers such as Kenneth Anger and Barbara Hammer. "They bring in a lot of experimental work," documentary filmmaker Gordon Quinn told the Chicago Sun-Times in 1982. "Their Lesbian and Gay Film Festival was an enormous success. It influenced film programs around the country." Audiences grew and offerings included more narrative and nonfiction feature-length entries by independent filmmakers. This year's lineup includes diverse genres. Even a horror film with a Satanic ectopic pregnancy. Here are a few to check out: "Meeting marsha" Writer-director McKenzie Goodwin, co-host of the Two Dykes and a Mic podcast, scores a delightful L.A. comedy on queer careerism. The title's aging TV star, the egg donor mom of a struggling playwright, shows up and upsets a lesbian wedding proposal. The screening is sponsored by Tello Films, a streamer that bills itself as "Like Netflix, but lesbian." (6:30 p.m. Sept. 23, Landmark's Century Centre Cinema, 2828 N. Clark St.) "The brittney griner story" Alexandria Stapleton directs a moving profile of the celebrated 6-foot-9-inch pro basketball center who was detained on drug charges and sentenced to a Russian penal colony. This ESPN documentary ought to appeal to more than WNBA fans. Spoiler: She was freed in a high-profile prisoner swap. Co-presented by Bad Queers Podcast and Babe's Sports Bar. (4:15 p.m. Sept. 20, Landmark) "The celluloid closet" For closing night, Webb books a 30th anniversary screening of a landmark documentary by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Lily Tomlin narrates this critique of the history of Hollywood stereotypes of gay, lesbian and trans characters. The title comes from the 1981 book by Vito Russo. He started researching when working in the Museum of Modern Art's film archive. Webb remembers him lugging two cans of 35mm clips to the Music Box for a snowy Champagne opening night in 1986. "I was so incredibly impressed that he had gone through this hellish day [canceled flights, bad weather] and that he had such a positive showmanship," recalled Webb. (6 p.m. Sept. 27, Chicago Filmmakers Firehouse Cinema, 1326 W. Hollywood Ave.) Reeling's opening and closing nights both make real the agenda found on the fest's site: "For 44 years, Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival has believed in the magic of queer cinema. Not because it lets us escape the world, but because it helps us see the world, and each other, a little more clearly." Chicago Sun-TimesContributor

'Hunting Gary Glitter' 3 part crime docuseries coming to Netflix in October 2026.

'Hunting Gary Glitter' 3 part crime docuseries coming to Netflix in October 2026. Netflix's 3-part crime docuseries 'Hunting Gary Glitter' will be released globally on October 14, 2026. A new three-part docuseries, centered on the journalists who chased Gary Glitter around the globe and exposed him for the terrible crimes he committed before his 1997 conviction, is coming to Netflix on October 14, 2026. We have all the details on the new docuseries, including the trailer and first-look photos. The director of Hunting Gary Glitter is Sebastian Smith, who previously directed documentaries such as Girl on the Run: The Hunt for America's Most Wanted Woman, Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel, and Netflix's The Devil on Trial. Get the latest Netflix news, reviews, and releases in your inbox. The series is produced by Voltage TV, with Sam Starbuck (The Tinder Swindler) and Sanjay Singhal (Scoop) as executive producers. Hunting Gary Glitter will be released on Netflix on October 14, 2026. A trailer for the series has also been released by Netflix. Netflix has released a logline for the series: "A string of dogged journalists chases fugitive pop star Gary Glitter across the globe - from Cuba to Cambodia to Vietnam - determined to expose the child sexual abuse he concealed behind decades of chart-topping fame. This documentary follows their pursuit alongside the survivors who speak out, charting Glitter's 1997 conviction, through to his years on the run, and eventual incarceration." Who is Gary Glitter? Paul Francis Gadd, better known by his stage name Gary Glitter, is a British former singer, songwriter, and record producer. After changing his stage name from Paul Raven to Gary Glitter, he found success in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to his eccentric glitter suits, on-stage performances, and glam rock music. However, in the 1990s, his music career came to an end after he was convicted in 1999 for downloading and being in possession of child pornography. After fleeing the UK, Glitter would seek refuge from the public eye in countries such as Cuba, Spain, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, each attempt to settle would eventually result in him being recognized and reported to the local authorities, forcing him to flee to another country, all the while being pursued by the press. Glitter would eventually be arrested in Vietnam in November 2005 for committing sexual abuse crimes against young women and children in Vũng Tàu. After serving a prison sentence in Thủ Đức Prison from March 2006 to August 2008, upon his release, he was banned from entering at least 19 countries and eventually returned to the UK, where he was added to the Sex Offenders Register for life. Several years later, in the wake of the death of a notorious media personality and pedophile, Jimmy Savile, his crimes resurfaced once more, and he would eventually be arrested, charged, and convicted for crimes he committed between 1977 and 1980. In February 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison but would serve only half his sentence under the sentencing guidelines in effect when he committed the offenses. However, Glitter would return to prison after it was discovered that he was using a mobile phone while in prison in order to access the dark web. Gary Glitter currently resides in prison in the UK and was recently charged once more for another historical crime he committed against an underage girl with whom he had unlawful sexual intercourse between 1978 and 1981. Titled The New Stanford Prison Experiment, the series will reportedly premiere on October 21 with six 45-minute episodes. "Thirty willing participants enter a real prison and are randomly assigned as guards or prisoners," an official synopsis obtained by Variety reads. "Thrust into a system of power, hierarchy, and control, they'll discover whether ordinary people inevitably conform to the roles they're given - or whether empathy, morality, and individuality can withstand the forces pushing them in the opposite direction. As the pressure builds and the balance of power begins to shift, the central question feels more urgent than ever: Does power corrupt?" The Independent has contacted Netflix for comment. On X, people have reacted in disbelief to the news that Netflix is reviving the experiment, which was abandoned after just six days as the students playing guards became psychologically abusive and those playing prisoners became anxious, emotionally depressed and enraged. Responding to Variety's report, one person wrote: "I'm sorry but WHAT. like what in the actual???" "Our reality is a never-ending parody and it ain't even a funny one," wrote another. "Netflix learned entirely the WRONG lessons from Squid Game," a third added, referring to the streamer's beloved South Korean drama about a group of elites who force cash-strapped contestants to compete in deadly games for a life-changing cash prize. "Did we not learn from the first one or..." wrote a fourth. In the infamous 1971 prison study, Dr. Philip Zimbardo and a team of graduate students recruited college-aged males to spend two weeks in a mock prison in the basement of a building on the Stanford campus. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent. Offices were converted into cells, the corridor was turned into a yard and a janitor's cupboard became the "hole." A 2016 drama starring Billy Crudup as Zimbardo showed in claustrophobic detail how wrong things went. Several of the normal, well-educated students who had been chosen at random to be guards soon began to derive pleasure from psychologically torturing the prisoners. Others simply stood by and did nothing while their colleagues sexually humiliated inmates, deprived them of sleep, forced them to defecate into buckets, and much more besides. Zimbardo was criticized for taking the role of superintendent - becoming an active participant in the study and no longer a neutral observer. "The outcome of our study was shocking and unexpected," Zimbardo would later co-write with one of the graduate students who was part of the project. The experiment is now used in psychology classes to study the psychology of evil and the ethics of psychological research with human subjects, Stanford said in a statement. "No such research can ever be done again," Zimbardo told The Independent in 2016. "The human subjects committees have gone to the far extreme. You cannot do anything in research that causes undue stress to participants. It eliminates so many key questions on human nature."
