About the Role
Under the direction of the Manager, Patient Relations, the Medical Interpreter provides accurate,impartial, and culturally responsive interpretation servicesto supportsafe, effective, and equitable patient care. The role isfully integrated into clinical operations and is essential to ensuring clear communication, patient safety, informed consent, and compliance with federal, state, and hospital regulatory requirements. The interpreter facilitates communication across spoken languages and American Sign Language (ASL), supports documentation and audit integrity, and serves as a linguistic and cultural resource to patients, families, and staff.
Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
Provides medical interpretation services under the supervision of the Program Coordinator
Facilitates clear communication between patients and staff who speak different languages, including spoken languages and sign language
Ensures accurate and confidential interpretation of medical and related information
Adheres to hospital policies, procedures, and patient confidentiality regulations
May deliver trilingual interpretation services in Spanish or Portuguese and American Sign Language (ASL)
Supports effective and inclusive communication across diverse patient populations
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a science, language, or human services field is required.
- Fluency in English, applicable spoken language(s), and American Sign Language (ASL) is required.
- Competency must be demonstrated upon hire and maintained per organizational and regulatory standards.
- Additional fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred.
- National Interpreter Certification (NIC) for ASL is strongly preferred; candidates without it must show active progress toward obtaining it.
- National Board Certification for Medical Interpreters (spoken language) is required and must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- Specific training or experience in medical interpretation is required.
- Must have a minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training.
- Strong understanding of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Additional related experience, education, or training may be substituted for the degree.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)
The expected salary range for this position is ($64,055.00- $91,663.00 )per year, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
