Requirements
- A college or university degree from an accredited school or college is required.
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline is required.
- Current or eligible State of Illinois licensure or registration is required.
- Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office is required.
- A current Advanced Practice Nurse license in Illinois or eligibility to receive one by the start date is required.
- Clinical competency, leadership and teaching skills, and the ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments are required.
- The ability to interview patients and obtain medical information is required.
- Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire is required.
- Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and Drug Enforcement Administration number is required.
- Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the University of Chicago Medical Staff Office before the start date is required.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, written communication, verbal communication, analytical, and independent-work skills are required.
- Proficiency in using computers is required.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and manage surgical and procedural patients before their scheduled intervention.
- Provide direct primary health care in collaboration with supervising physicians and the multidisciplinary health team, including identifying, managing, and referring health problems.
- Assist anesthesiologists through organized instruction and supervised practice.
- Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
- Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the date in the patient's record.
- Screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission and make referrals to other disciplines as indicated.
- Write progress notes and prepare patient workups and summaries that note pertinent positive and negative findings.
- Obtain psychosocial histories relevant to patient care and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
- Perform and document physical examinations according to government guidelines and personalize therapies.
- Order appropriate laboratory tests according to clinical diagnosis, clinical pathways, and protocols.
- Arrange and order appropriate diagnostic studies under the direction of the attending physician.
- Collaborate and act as a liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources to coordinate patient care.
- Select appropriate communication approaches to achieve desired patient-care outcomes.
- Pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
- Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
- Participate in community health education as needed.
- Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by the supervising physician as needed.
- Prepare statistical reports and analyses describing progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as needed.
- Act as a resource for clinical skills for staff on or off the unit.
- Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures unique to the clinical setting as needed.
- Perform procedures according to the privileges detailed in the Advanced Practice Nurse Delineation of Privileges.
- Evaluate goals and outcomes based on patient, family, and organizational benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- An advanced degree or equivalent from an accredited school or college of nursing is preferred.
- Previous clinical experience in an intensive care unit setting is preferred.
