HKEX introduces S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index in collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices.

HKEX introduces S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index in collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) today announced the launch of the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, a new co-branded index developed in collaboration with leading index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI). The index is designed to measure the performance of leading US-listed companies and largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong. As Hong Kong's equity market continues to grow and evolve, technology and innovation-driven companies are playing an increasingly important role. Meanwhile, investors are looking across markets for broader opportunities and diversification, driving demand for more flexible ways to access global markets. Against this backdrop, the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index brings together two complementary market exposures within a single benchmark. It combines the growth potential of Hong Kong's technology and innovation companies with the scale and diversity of the US large-cap market, offering investors broader exposure across geographies, sectors and sources of growth. The index allocates approximately 60 per cent to the HKEX Tech 100 Index and 40 per cent to the S&P 500 and rebalances quarterly. Gregory Yu, HKEX Head of Markets, said: "Innovation is reshaping how companies drive growth and how investors access opportunities. We are delighted to deepen our collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices through this new index, which combines Hong Kong's vibrant technology and innovation ecosystem with the breadth of the US large-cap market. By bringing these complementary exposures together in a single benchmark, we are creating new pathways for investors to access opportunities across markets. At HKEX, we are committed to building out our index suite and developing innovative solutions that support the long-term growth and vibrancy of our markets." Robert Ross, Chief Commercial Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said: "As investors increasingly look across markets to capture growth opportunities, there is growing demand for benchmarks that bring together complementary exposures in new ways. We are delighted to collaborate with HKEX to develop the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, combining Hong Kong's dynamic technology sector with leading US large-cap companies in a single, transparent benchmark. The index demonstrates how benchmark innovation can connect distinct market opportunities through a consistent, rules-based framework." The S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, launched on 30 September 2026, is designed to support the eligibility of ETFs tracking it for potential inclusion in Southbound Stock Connect. The index will also facilitate portfolio diversification and cross-market capital flows by providing exposure to both the US and Hong Kong equity markets through a single benchmark. The HKEX Tech 100 Index, launched in December 2025, is designed to measure the performance of 100 of the largest Hong Kong-listed companies with high exposure to the six technology themes: artificial intelligence, biotech and pharmaceutical, electric vehicles and smart driving, information technology, internet and robotics. The S&P 500 is widely regarded as the best single gauge of large-cap US equities. The index includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 85 per cent of available US market capitalization. As of the end of 2025, approximately US$23 trillion was indexed or benchmarked to the S&P 500, including roughly US$16 trillion in passively managed assets.

SFC's Julia Leung maps next phase of Hong Kong liquidity reforms.

SFC's Julia Leung maps next phase of Hong Kong liquidity reforms. Brokers, clearing members and listed issuers will see changes to margin, settlement and board lots as the SFC seeks to build on recent liquidity gains. Get the hottest Fintech Hong Kong News once a month in your Inbox Julia Leung, chief executive of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), has set out Hong Kong's next steps to deepen market liquidity. At an ASIFMA conference, she said average daily stock turnover has passed HK$270 billion so far this year. That is 160% higher than in 2023. Leung said that when friction is removed at the right points, liquidity tends to follow. They raised the rebate on cash collateral and halved the fees on non-cash collateral. Since October 2025, the rebate rate on Hong Kong dollar cash has risen 45% in the derivatives market. In the cash market, it is up eightfold. The next major step is cross-market margining, so firms can offset margin across HKEX's clearing houses. Smaller minimum spreads have cut bid-ask spreads by 38% for the first 300 stocks. HKEX will soon set a timeline for T+1 settlement. From November, board lot reform will cover all listed firms. Work is under way on longer trading hours, starting with derivatives. HKEX and the HKMA are testing e-HKD for after-hours margin payments. Turnover in exchange-traded products has grown 3.6 times since 2023. These products make up nearly a fifth of Main Board trades. Leung tied this growth to ETF Connect, which covers 31 ETFs. She also cited new products such as virtual asset spot ETFs. Leung said Hong Kong's progress shows that liquidity is built by design rather than left to chance, with further work still ahead. By bringing together the four member entities, the strategic working group works to seize opportunities and build comprehensive collaborative initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance the attractiveness and growth of the two markets through a set of pillars, including Islamic and sustainable finance, innovation, as well as advancing capital markets and raising the level of integration between them. This announcement of the establishment of the strategic working group came to consolidate cooperation and integrate efforts in the capital markets sector between the Dubai Financial Services Authority and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, which was hosted by Hong Kong, with the participation of more than 350 participants from the two regions, whether in person or via virtual platforms. This year's conference represents the third edition of the leading partnership initiative between the Dubai Financial Services Authority and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. For the second consecutive year, Nasdaq Dubai and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing are participating as strategic partners in supporting the conference. The launch of the strategic working group came as an advanced step reflecting the evolution of regulatory and financial discussions, giving cooperation an official dimension that contributes to coordinating priorities and accelerating tangible achievements. Under the signed terms of reference, this initiative aims to enhance institutional cooperation, connect regulators and exchanges in the two financial centres, and continue supporting the development of the economic corridor between the Middle East and Asia. Through permanent communication channels and systematic cooperation, the participating entities will exchange views on market trends, discuss new opportunities and challenges, and explore future cooperation opportunities. This interconnection supports the two markets and gives investors broader choices and greater opportunities to benefit and achieve gains in both financial centres." For his part, Hamed Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Nasdaq Dubai and Dubai Financial Market, said: "This strategic working group comes as an extension of the close cooperation existing between Dubai and Hong Kong. Nasdaq Dubai's position as a leading global centre for listing fixed income instruments and Islamic finance forms a strong platform for connecting issuers and investors in the Middle East and Asia, especially in the fields of sukuk and sustainable finance. We look forward to enhancing this cooperation and consolidating market links between the two regions." In turn, Eddie Yue, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, said: "The strategic working group represents another key step toward deepening institutional links and increasing market connectivity. By developing this cooperation mechanism, we are establishing a dedicated platform to better understand and align strategic priorities, as well as explore new initiatives to facilitate trade and investment flows between Asia and the Middle East." Bonnie Y. Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, stated: "Global capital flows are increasingly influenced by the growing economic links between Asia and the Middle East. As leading international financial centres at the heart of their respective regions, Hong Kong and Dubai have complementary advantages that help facilitate the mutual flow of capital, ideas, and opportunities between the two regions. The growing presence of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing in Dubai's commodities sector, along with our cooperation with other financial markets in the United Arab Emirates, reflects our long-term commitment to this vital economic corridor." The new strategic working group represents an important step to translate this commitment into practical measures, by deepening cooperation, increasing market connectivity, and stimulating innovation and sustainable growth.
