About the Job

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate, such as an Sc.D., M.D., or D.V.M., is required in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, medical physics, computer science, applied physics, or a closely related field.
  • Candidates with non-U.S. degrees may be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.
  • International candidates should note that immigration classifications such as H-1B and J-1 generally require the requisite degree to be conferred before a petition can be filed or a visa document issued to sponsor the individual.
  • The role is performed on-site or at a designated assignment location.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply advanced computed tomography methods, with a focus on photon-counting CT, quantitative image analysis, and machine learning.
  • Contribute to NIH-funded research projects in preclinical and translational imaging, including spectral photon-counting CT of cerebral vasculature and intracranial aneurysms, photon-counting CT and computational imaging of head and neck cancer, and multiorgan CT studies of aging and cardiovascular disease.
  • Work on photon-counting and spectral CT imaging; CT reconstruction and image-processing methods; material decomposition and quantitative spectral imaging; image segmentation, registration, and quantitative morphometry; machine learning and deep learning for CT image analysis and reconstruction; computational and digital-twin models for preclinical imaging; analysis of longitudinal and dynamic imaging data; and development and validation of imaging biomarkers.
  • Combine method development with analysis of experimental imaging data.
  • Participate directly in preclinical imaging studies and in the development of new imaging protocols.
  • Discharge research or scholarship responsibilities conscientiously, which may include teaching responsibilities.
  • Conform to standards of responsible conduct in research and comply with good scholarly and research practice.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook or comparable records of research activity, which remain the property of Duke University upon termination.
  • Adhere to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and related matters.
  • Discuss all facets of research activities openly and promptly with the mentor.
  • Promptly disclose to the mentor possession and intended distribution of materials, reagents, software, copyrightable discoveries, and potentially patentable discoveries derived from research.
  • Conduct collegially toward research-group members and others in accordance with the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies.
  • Comply with applicable University and departmental policies and procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • A strong quantitative and computational background.
  • Experience in one or more of CT or other tomographic image reconstruction, medical image analysis, machine learning or deep learning, Python and/or MATLAB, scientific computing, and numerical methods.
  • Experience with computing, PyTorch, spectral CT, photon-counting detectors, or preclinical imaging.
