Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalency, or any equivalent combination of education and experience and six months of related experience in laboratory animal care for Research Animal Technician I.
  • Successful completion of a formal Laboratory Animal Science Course may substitute for three months of laboratory animal care experience for Research Animal Technician I.
  • High School diploma or equivalency, or any equivalent combination of education and experience and one year of related experience in laboratory animal care for Research Animal Technician II.
  • Successful completion of a formal Laboratory Animal Science Course may substitute for three months of laboratory animal care experience for Research Animal Technician II.
  • High School diploma or equivalency, or any equivalent combination of education and experience and two years of related experience in laboratory animal care for Research Animal Technician III.
  • Successful completion of a formal Laboratory Animal Science Course may substitute for three months of laboratory animal care experience for Research Animal Technician III.
  • Must be able to lift or move heavy objects and move/push/pull carts on weight bearing wheels.
  • May need to carry heavy loads.
  • Must be able to tolerate a significant amount of standing, bending, stretching, walking, and/or moving.
  • Must not be allergic to animals, latex, waste products, or bedding.
  • Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc. and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
  • Alternate shifts are available for work outside of normal business hours, such as a Tuesday through Saturday shift or a Sunday through Thursday shift.
  • Must work weekends and holidays as required on a shared basis.
  • Must have a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
Responsibilities
  • Husbandry duties for laboratory animals.
  • Sanitation of assigned animal holding rooms.
  • Maintenance of assigned support areas.
Desired Qualifications
  • Successful completion of any Comparative Medicine Program Laboratory Animal Science Course or successful completion within the first year in position for level III (not required)
  • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification (not required)
