Samsung doubles market share in race with SK Hynix for Nvidia's AI chip dominance

Two South Korean chipmakers are vying to become essential suppliers to American AI companies. SK Hynix and Samsung control 83% of the global high-bandwidth memory market, which provides crucial components for AI processors. SK Hynix has maintained a lead with advanced technology and early partnerships with Nvidia. However, Samsung has more than doubled its market share over the past year, securing deals with both Nvidia and OpenAI. SK Hynix is building a $4 billion packaging facility in Indiana. Samsung has joined OpenAI's Stargate project and is collaborating with Nvidia on AI infrastructure, including an AI factory deploying 50,000 Nvidia GPUs. Both companies face challenges from US-China tensions, as they maintain legacy plants in China whilst courting American partners. China accounts for roughly one-third of the global market, but domestic Chinese alternatives are emerging as competitors.

US chip industry faces 157,000 worker shortage by 2030 as Samsung, TSMC scramble for talent

The US semiconductor industry faces a critical shortage of up to 157,000 skilled workers by 2030, according to a McKinsey and SEMI Foundation report. This labour crisis affects major chipmakers including Samsung, TSMC, and Micron as they expand US manufacturing facilities. Only 3% of US engineering graduates enter the semiconductor sector annually, whilst 73% of chip employers report significant difficulty filling engineering roles. Companies are responding by recruiting aggressively in Asia, where talent pipelines are stronger and worker bonuses can exceed $500,000. Samsung is investing $35 billion in Texas facilities expected to create 3,500 jobs. To address the shortage, chipmakers are funding university programmes, with Purdue and Arizona State launching dedicated semiconductor degrees. TSMC plans to fill 6,000 roles at its Arizona fabs. Federal support includes $200 million for workforce development, helping over 80 community colleges launch semiconductor programmes since 2022.

US chipmakers face 157,000 worker shortage by 2030 amid fab expansion

The US semiconductor industry faces a potential shortage of up to 157,000 workers by 2030, according to a new report. This comes as the country experiences its fastest chip manufacturing expansion in history. Taiwan Semiconductor and Intel have brought new fabrication plants online in Arizona, whilst Samsung is set to open a facility in Texas later this year. Samsung has expressed concern about the labour shortage, which threatens production capacity needed to meet AI chip demand. The workforce gap presents a significant challenge as chipmakers require adequate personnel to support their expanding manufacturing operations. Companies and educational institutions are now working on solutions to address the shortfall.
