What believers are saying

  • Data centers drive growth: AMD's revenue rose 50% to $11.5 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • US learning support is conditional: AMD reimburses up to $5,250 yearly for education, subject to manager approval and funding.
  • Planned demand has an anchor: AMD's July 2026 Anthropic deal targets up to two gigawatts of computing from 2027.

What critics are saying

  • Advanced chip supply relies on one foundry: TSMC makes all AMD processor and graphics wafers at 7nm or smaller.
  • Gaming is shrinking despite AI growth: AMD's gaming revenue fell 31% to $779 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Lab work limits location flexibility: AMD lists its Santa Clara optical-interconnect integration engineer role as on-site.

What makes AMD unique

  • Two console families use its designs: AMD designs custom processors for Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series.
  • Developers inspect its GPU software: AMD's ROCm stack is open source, while Nvidia's CUDA platform remains proprietary.
  • Chip circuitry stays adjustable: AMD sells adaptive processors whose hardware configuration changes after manufacture, without replacing the chip.

AMD shares fall 8% on Lam Research supply warning; model sees $2,330 by 2030

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) fell 8.10% to $507.93 on October 22, after chip equipment maker Lam Research said supply constraints held back its guidance. AMD fell harder than the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (down 6.72%) and NVIDIA (down 4.40%). The drop came entirely from a lower earnings multiple, according to TIKR. AMD's forward price-to-earnings ratio fell from about 55 to about 46, while earnings estimates held near $11 a share. TIKR's mid-case model values the stock at about $2,330 by December 31, 2030, a 359% return. The main risk is delayed rack shipments. AMD reports third-quarter results on November 3.

AMD stock may stall until 2028 at 136 times earnings as growth is already priced in

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares may stall through 2028, according to one analyst view, because the stock has already priced in years of growth. AMD's data center revenue rose 107% year over year in the second quarter, a sign its chips are gaining ground against Nvidia, the industry standard. Still, AMD trades at 136 times trailing earnings, down from over 160 a few days ago. It trades at 33.5 times next year's earnings, against 27 for Nvidia. The author argues the stock needs about a year of flat performance so business results can catch up with its price. He suggests holders with big gains consider selling, and that new buyers wait.

AMD's data centre revenue doubles to $6.7B as Lisa Su eyes another doubling in 2027

AMD's second-quarter revenue rose 50.1% year over year to $11.54 billion, with Data Center revenue more than doubling to $6.718 billion. Data Center now accounts for 58% of sales, and the company guided third-quarter revenue to roughly $13 billion. Chief executive officer Lisa Su expects Data Center revenue to more than double again in 2027. The company now ships EPYC server processors and Instinct AI chips together in a full rack called Helios. OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Anthropic have planned deployments of up to 6, 6, and 2 gigawatts respectively. Non-GAAP operating margin rose to 27% from 12%. Free cash flow for 2025 was $5.519 billion. At $902.3 billion, AMD's market value is about one-sixth of NVIDIA's $5.36 trillion. Its price-to-earnings ratio is 208, which leaves little room for error.

Nvidia spends $7.05B on R&D versus AMD's $2.53B, but a 20% rise hits AMD's profit far harder

Nvidia can absorb a bigger research budget far more easily than AMD, a comparison of their latest quarters shows. Nvidia spent $7.05 billion on research and development in its quarter ended July 26; AMD spent $2.53 billion in its quarter ended June 27. Research took 7.3% of Nvidia's $96.22 billion revenue, against 21.9% of AMD's $11.54 billion. A 20% rise in research spending, with all else fixed, would cost Nvidia $1.41 billion and cut its $63.73 billion operating income by 2.2%. For AMD, the $506 million cost would cut its $1.99 billion operating income by 25.4%. AMD could gain more operating leverage if adoption of its chips grows without equally fast expense growth.

Nvidia's data centres drive 92.5% of sales versus 58.1% at AMD, raising slowdown risk

Nvidia is far more exposed to a data-center slowdown than AMD, based on reported sales mix. Data centers made up about 92.5% of Nvidia's $96.221 billion quarterly revenue (quarter ended July 26), against 58.1% of AMD's $11.536 billion (quarter ended June 27). A 10% drop in data-center sales would cut Nvidia's total revenue by about 9.25% and AMD's by 5.8%. At a 20% drop, the cuts would be 18.5% and 11.6%. AMD's other units offer no sure cushion. Gaming revenue fell 31% year on year in the June quarter, while client revenue rose 23% and embedded revenue rose 19%. Valuation also differs. Trailing free-cash-flow multiples were near 41 for Nvidia and 106 for AMD as of October 16.
