The Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services (HHVS), housed within the County Executive Office, is comprised of the Director’s Office and six operational divisions: Public Health, Clinical Care Services, Access to Care (Health Choice), Medical Examiner’s Office, Transition Services, and Veterans Services. The mission of HHVS is to promote health and well-being for all Wayne County residents through programs, policies, and partnerships that address gaps in access and opportunity across the lifespan.

HHVS Summer Fellowship Program Overview
The HHVS Summer Fellowship is designed to cultivate the next generation of public health leaders while advancing departmental priorities.
Program Goals
- Strengthen the public health workforce pipeline.
- Support HHVS divisions in achieving strategic priorities.
- Promote equity-driven public health practice.
- Expand collaboration and inter-departmental partnerships.
- Model accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Program Details
- Duration: Eight (8) weeks
- Dates: June 2 through July 24, 2026
- Schedule: Part-time, up to 20 hours per week
- Fellows are placed within HHVS operational divisions or the Director’s Office under the guidance of experienced public service professionals.
Supervision or Guidance Received
Interns will be supervised by a preceptor, who may be the Division Director, Department Officer, or designee.
Education Requirements
Level I: High school students with an interest in public health, healthcare, policy, law, social work, or a related field.
Level II: Current community college or university student, interested in public health, healthcare, policy, law, social work, or a related field.
Level III: Current master’s student in public health, health administration, policy, or health sciences.
Experience and Skills (All Levels)
Familiarity with or interest in public health, healthcare, health administration, policy, law, social work, or related fields.
Strong interest in health and human services and a desire to make a positive community impact.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic familiarity with data analysis tools.
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Eagerness to learn, adaptable, and open to taking on new challenges.
Employment Eligibility
Applicants must meet all employment eligibility requirements. A current I-94 form containing a temporary I-551 stamp and photograph may be accepted. Selected candidates must successfully complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form prior to the start of employment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Required Tasks for All Interns
- Assist with data collection, reporting, and program support.
- Participate in HHVS Fellowship activities and community outreach.
- Support meetings, events, and projects across HHVS divisions.
- Complete a supervised project and present findings.
- Use Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and SharePoint.
- Have reliable transportation for work and programming activities.
- Lead a project and create a presentation summarizing your internship
Internship Levels
Level I
- Provide administrative and programmatic support to HHVS teams.
- Assist with basic data collection, data entry, and organization of program materials.
- Support community outreach, educational activities, and public health events.
- Learn foundational concepts related to local public health operations and health equity.
- Complete a defined project with guidance from supervisors.
- Perform additional tasks assigned.
Level II
- Assist with data collection, data management, basic analysis, and reporting.
- Support development and implementation of health and human services programs, campaigns, and quality improvement efforts.
- Participate in community outreach and assist in organizing public health events.
- Collaborate with HHVS teams to support program operations.
- Complete one primary project culminating in a presentation or written report.
- Gain exposure to grant requirements, budgeting structures, and compliance processes.
- Perform additional tasks assigned.
Level III
- Conduct data collection, management, analysis, and reporting for program planning and evaluation.
- Apply public health theory and data science principles to workflow automation and process improvement.
- Support design, implementation, and evaluation of health and human services programs.
- Collaborate across HHVS divisions and with community partners, legislators, and stakeholders.
- Lead a defined project and produce a final presentation or report with recommendations.
- Support process improvements to enhance access, quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.
- Perform additional tasks assigned.
