Requirements
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration is required; 8 to 10 years of relevant work experience may substitute for the degree.
- A coding or nursing credential such as Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Coding Specialist, or Registered Nurse, or a financial background, is required.
- At least one year of hospital and/or physician practice coding experience is required.
- Demonstrated communication skills and the ability to work independently and deal effectively with various types of personnel are required.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products is required.
Responsibilities
- Review compliance regulations and coding requirements, primarily Medicare, and incorporate changes into the coding process.
- Educate Department Managers, Practice Managers, and providers on compliance and coding regulations.
- Coordinate with Department Managers, Practice Managers, and providers on new procedures to ensure charges are set up appropriately and timely and that staff responsible for entering charges are educated.
- Review procedure and surgical documentation and provide education on improvements needed to accurately code encounters.
- Assist in developing hospital system policies relating to coding, documentation requirements, and new charge items.
- Conduct audits to ensure documented charges are captured and verify that charges are billed correctly on claims.
- Coordinate with the billing department to resolve coding denial issues.
- Assist the Chargemaster Coordinator with other projects and analyses.
Desired Qualifications
- Three to five years of experience in a hospital and/or physician practice setting.
