Brigit is looking for a Backend Lead Software Engineer for our Credit Builder team. Our product has tremendous traction helping lower income Americans improve their credit profiles and now we need someone to lead us in making it even better. We’ve built a backend stack of Java + Kotlin microservices in Google Cloud with a React Native mobile app written in Typescript and we’re looking for someone who is capable of guiding engineers in both codebases. 

Our team has two main goals:

1) Feature development supporting numerous external and internal applications.  The next generation of our product may look nothing like what it does today - and we welcome that!  The degree to which we implement new User flows, compute our proprietary algorithms, integrate with 3rd party APIs, store data, and serve traffic will make or break our success.

2) Scalability and maintainability of our customer-facing applications.  Growing from 100k users to 10 million presents unique technical challenges.  Because we’re growing so quickly, the efficiency and reliability of both our customer facing and internal tools needs to improve.

Our team is small and nimble; you’ll get an extraordinary amount of autonomy and ownership. More importantly, you have a large say in the direction of the company -- both in terms of our technology and our product.  Recent accomplishments of our CB team are:

• Building a credit system that automatically reports payment behavior to the 3 major Credit Bureaus 

• Implementing advanced mathematical processes behind our proprietary risk algorithm for approving users onto the Credit platform

• End to end User notification (via SMS, Email, Push) workflows

• Building internal tools that enable our Customer Support Specialists to help our customers ASAP

What you have

• 5+ years of full-time, industry Java experience.

• A proven track record of being an individual contributor in a product engineering setting. You’ve built products for users and you’ve worked with engineers building APIs for other services + mobile/web clients to consume. 

• 1+ years of tech lead experience for a backend team. You’ve helped guide other engineers in translating product asks to code. You’re capable of consuming codebases, navigating stacktraces and helping more junior engineers debug.  

• Data modeling experience. You know how to translate real world concepts into SQL tables that are easy to understand for other engineers and our data teams.

• Similar to the above, experience with SQL is a must. Constructing schemas, performing migrations, and writing analytical queries.

• You’re able to set roadmaps, push back, and know when some asks do not make sense for your team. The tech lead role at Brigit shares some responsibilities with product management and you’ll be expected to be the champion for your team. A technical lead will interact with other internal Brigit teams, compliance teams from our vendors, and third party account executives.

What’s nice to have

• React experience. We aren’t necessarily looking for someone who knows about every release of React since 2016, but it’s required you know how to read our frontend codebase. You will be expected to be up to date with our best practices in the frontend, because it will help you plan the technical roadmap for our sprints.

• We deploy our microservices with Kubernetes, Docker and Google Cloud. Having past deployment flows in these are a plus, but we know these are things that can quickly be ramped up on.
  

What you’ll be doing

• 60% of your time will be spent on “tech lead responsibilities”in conjunction with the pod’s engineering manager. This includes: reviewing PRs, guiding + enabling other engineers in completing their tasks, supporting the product manager in prioritization, and debugging issues. 

• 40% of your time will still be spent doing IC work. You will be writing code!

• Decreasing our customer service workload by building improvements to the product or improving our internal automations

The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $140,000 - $180,000. This range does not include any other compensation components or other benefits for which an individual may be eligible. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
