About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

What believers are saying

  • R2 is lifting sales: deliveries hit a record 19,248 in the September 2026 quarter, up 46% from a year earlier.
  • Uber backs Rivian's self-driving push: it pledged up to $1.25 billion in March 2026 and will buy 10,000 R2 robotaxis.
  • Room to grow: Rivian's $5 billion Georgia factory, set to start building cars in 2028, plans 7,500 permanent jobs.

What critics are saying

  • Losses still run deep: Rivian lost $837 million from April to June 2026, and its car sales lost money.
  • Layoffs keep coming: Rivian cut about 600 jobs in October 2025 and hundreds in June 2026, mostly sales and service.
  • Stock grants have shrunk: Rivian shares fell 27% from January to October 2026, versus Tesla's 17% drop.

What makes Rivian unique

  • Volkswagen buys its tech: joint-venture work for VW, Rivian's largest owner, brought in $308 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Amazon is its anchor customer: it ordered 100,000 custom Rivian delivery vans, and over 40,000 ran its routes by mid-2026.
  • Unlike Tesla, Rivian adds lidar: in December 2025 it unveiled its own RAP1 self-driving chip and laser sensors for R2.

Rivian's $58,000 R2 SUV beats demand forecasts, but investors await proof of profit

Rivian shares have fallen 25% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 gained 3.4%. The electric vehicle maker is ramping up its cheaper R2 SUV at its plant in Normal, Illinois. Rivian launched the most expensive R2 version at $58,000 and plans lower-priced trims in early 2027. Executives said reservations are turning into orders faster than expected, with many buyers new to EVs. Third-quarter deliveries hit a record 19,248, up 46% from a year earlier. Rivian expects 2026 deliveries of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles, weighted toward the fourth quarter. It targets positive gross profit on the R2 by the end of 2026. Costs remain the unproven part. Rivian posted a $36 million automotive gross loss in the second quarter, against $335 million a year earlier, and sold about $1.3 billion of new shares in July.

Rivian spinoff Mind Robotics hires ex-Ford EV chief Doug Field as president after $1B+ backing

Mind Robotics, an industrial AI and robotics startup spun out of Rivian last year, has hired former Ford electric vehicle chief Doug Field as president. The news was shared on stage at Disrupt 2026. Field will run product, engineering, and operations day to day. Rivian chief executive officer RJ Scaringe stays involved. Mind Robotics has raised more than $1 billion from Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, Eclipse, Kleiner Perkins, and the venture arms of Volkswagen and Salesforce. It is building purpose-built robots, run on foundation models, to automate factory tasks at scale. Rivian is its first customer and a live manufacturing testbed. Field left Ford in April. He previously led Apple's Project Titan and was a senior vice president of engineering at Tesla.

Android Automotive vs Google built-in: what's the difference?

Android Automotive vs Google built-in: what's the difference? Moaataz Anwar October 11, 2026 0 Comments Decoding in-car infotainment: Android Automotive vs. Google built-in. As the automotive industry increasingly shifts away from phone-mirroring solutions like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, native infotainment systems are taking center stage. Google has positioned itself as a dominant force in this transition through two distinct but often confused software offerings: Android Automotive and Google Built-in. Understanding the distinction between these two is crucial for consumers navigating the modern vehicle purchasing landscape. Android Automotive: the foundational Operating System. Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) is a comprehensive, open-source software stack designed specifically for vehicles. It serves as the foundational operating system that manufacturers integrate directly into the car's hardware to control a wide array of functions, including the radio, climate control, camera feeds, and instrument clusters. Because it is open source, automakers possess the flexibility to design highly customized, brand-specific user interfaces. In some cases, such as with Rivian's proprietary software, the underlying Android architecture is utilized so seamlessly that the Google branding is entirely absent from the user experience. Google built-in: the licensed application suite. Conversely, Google Built-in is not an operating system itself, but rather a licensed suite of applications and services that manufacturers can integrate on top of an Android Automotive foundation. Introduced in 2020, this package grants drivers native access to core Google services such as Google Maps, the Google Play Store, and media applications like Spotify and YouTube, all running independently of a connected smartphone. Currently, over a dozen major automotive brands, including Volvo, Chevrolet, and Honda, offer vehicles equipped with Google Built-in. The integration of advanced AI. The capabilities of Google Built-in are rapidly evolving with the integration of advanced artificial intelligence. Google is actively replacing the traditional Google Assistant with Gemini across supported vehicle brands. This upgrade introduces sophisticated, voice-activated features, including real-time traffic-aware routing, EV-specific navigation, and the ability to manage emails, messages, and even in-car environmental settings through natural language conversations. While some manufacturers like Ford and Rivian are developing their own proprietary AI assistants, the dual-track approach highlights the industry's rapid acceleration toward intelligent, context-aware vehicle ecosystems. #AndroidAutomotive #GoogleBuiltIn #CarTech #InCarAI Posted bymoaataz Anwar.

Work trucks, cargo vans, not safe, according to IIHS study.

Work trucks, cargo vans, not safe, according to IIHS study. New crash-avoidance testing found cargo vans and heavy-duty pickups often perform worse than today's passenger vehicles. By Mark VaughnPublished: Oct 09, 2026 4:26 PM EDT Ouch! Look at that poor, inflatable motorcycle rider above. Hit by a commercial cargo van! Commercial vehicles like pickup trucks and cargo vans don't have to meet the same standards as regular passenger cars. Hence, they are less safe. But while that was assumed before, Autoweek now have evidence. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an insurance industry lobbying and testing entity, just completed tests on a number of commercial trucks and vans to see how they'd fare in real-world scenarios. Front crash prevention ratings: cargo vans and Class 3 pickups. "Cargo vans and heavy-duty pickups lag behind passenger vehicles when it comes to front crash prevention," IIHS said in announcing its new ratings for the vehicles. "Marginal and poor ratings are common among the first commercial vehicles put through the vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian crash avoidance tests," the Institute said when it released the new study. Does that mean Autoweek should give up on these rigs, or at least raise the standards for them? Is that even possible without major retooling? Hang on, there is hope. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Ram 3500 did well in tests. "In each test, there is at least one good performer, showing that meeting the challenge is not out of reach for manufacturers," IIHS said. "These results are a wake-up call for commercial vehicle makers," IIHS President David Harkey said. "Front crash prevention is especially important for these larger, heavier vans and trucks because of the danger they pose to other road users." The top performers in both tests are cargo vans. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 earns a "good" rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, and the Chevrolet BrightDrop 400 and Rivian RCV-Delivery 500 earn good ratings for pedestrian crash avoidance, IIHS said. The study started last June with a look at driver protection, whether commercial vehicles had essential features such as standard front and side airbags, advanced seat belt technology and effective seat belt reminders. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. "Many government standards for passenger vehicles, including airbag requirements, don't apply to delivery vans, box trucks, tractor-trailers, and larger work pickups," IIHS said. The study also looked at how good commercial vehicles were at detecting and avoiding stopped vehicles and pedestrians in traffic lanes. For instance, in 2024, 6,215 people were killed in crashes involving heavy- or medium-duty vehicles or light vans, accounting for 16% of all roadway fatalities in the US, researchers found. "Reducing that toll is a key part of the Institute's 30x30 vision of reducing fatalities 30 percent by 2030," said IIHS. The IIHS 30x30 initiative is a safety campaign aimed at reducing US traffic fatalities by 30 percent by the year 2030. Hopeful spots in the study were the BrightDrop 400, Ram 3500, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, and Rivian RCV Delivery 500, all of which scored either Good or Acceptable in Vehicle-to-Vehicle or Pedestrian tests. So buy one of those. Mark Vaughn grew up in a Ford family and spent many hours holding a trouble light over a straight-six miraculously fed by a single-barrel carburetor while his father cursed the Blue Oval, all its products and everyone who ever worked there. This was his introduction to objective automotive criticism. He started writing for City News Service in Los Angeles, then moved to Europe and became editor of a car magazine called, creatively, Auto. He decided Auto should cover Formula 1, sports prototypes and touring cars - no one stopped him! From there he interviewed with Autoweek at the 1989 Frankfurt motor show and has been with Autoweek ever since.

Rivian's annual Halloween mode goes Ghostbusters with officially licensed movie sounds, games, and A spooky voice assistant.

Rivian's annual Halloween mode goes Ghostbusters with officially licensed movie sounds, games, and A spooky voice assistant. Add Jalopnik on Google: Automakers love to celebrate the holidays, but there's no getting around the fact that a lot of what they do is just lame. And yes, that includes essentially every April Fools press release in at least the last 15 years. That said, connected cars and increased onboard processing power give brands a lot more options for their holiday celebrations. And sometimes they pull it off. Like Rivian did with this year's Ghostbusters-themed Halloween mode update, which will go live to owners on October 9. As you can see in the image above, Rivian, one of its most whimsical automakers, designed an Ecto-1-inspired R1S for the occasion that it's calling the Ecto-R1. It could have been incredibly cheesy, but it actually looks pretty rad, especially with the updated 22-inch Aero wheels. Rivian also secured a licensing deal with Sony, so the graphics on the front doors are the real deal. And Rivian actually built this thing: The roof rack is where its design team really leaned into the details. While every functional accessory including the sirens, spotlights, radar dish, and side tanks mirrors the original film car, the rack structure itself is pure Rivian with its distinctive stadium silhouette. Jalopnik also integrated a subtle compass design visible only from a top-down view. While the vintage emergency lights were sourced and restored, the custom frame and every accessory housing were fabricated in-house by its Special Projects team. Halloween mode 2026. Unfortunately for the few Ghostbusters fans still young enough to drive, Halloween mode won't transform their R1S into the Ecto-R1. Owners will, however, get the option to enjoy a Ghostbusters-themed driving experience if they want. Open the in-vehicle app while parked, and you'll have the option to choose one of several theme packs - Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman, or Random - that play their own LED light shows and officially licensed sounds, as well as changing the sound the car makes when it locks or unlocks. Continuing the theme, Rivian says its voice assistant "picks up a distinctively eerie tone for the season" and can be used to activate light shows. And while they aren't playable while driving, the update adds two seasonal games that can be played from the infotainment screen. The release also says "key visual cues stay active" while driving, but it isn't clear on what those are exactly. Oh, and there's a Trick-or-Treat mode that starts a light show and plays the "Ghostbusters" theme. Sure, it's completely unnecessary, but who cares? No one's forcing anyone to use the mode if they don't want to, and it seems like the kind of thing the grandkids will love. Heck, depending on the kid, it might be the coolest thing they've ever seen. Children are, after all, easily impressed, and anything with flashing lights and fun sounds is sure to be a hit. That probably changes at some point, but it's not like I have any idea how old they are when it happens. Twelve, maybe? Even if you don't own a Rivian, you may also enjoy the ad that goes along with the Halloween update's release. It features Bill Murray, the actor who starred in the original "Ghostbusters" more than 40 years ago.
