View

The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States that conducts national monetary policy, supervises and regulates banks and bank holding companies, and provides financial services for banks and the U.S. government. It uses tools like setting interest rates, market operations, bank supervision, and payments services to influence credit, prices, and financial stability, operating through 12 regional banks and a Board in Washington. It is different from private banks because it is a public-mission institution with a nationwide mandate and a regional structure that blends national policy with local insight, not focused on profits. Its goal is to promote a strong economy and a stable financial system for the United States.

Steve Forbes urges Fed to shrink balance sheet and lift dollar as import prices jump 8%

Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes, says the Federal Reserve should "cut the printing presses and shrink the balance sheet and appreciate the dollar" to fight inflation. He made the case in an October 21 television interview with Larry Kudlow. Forbes cited third-quarter GDP growth of 3.5% alongside import prices up 8%. He argues a weak dollar, not weak policy, is pushing up prices, and that rate hikes cannot fix it. Retailers show the stakes. Target booked a $994 million tariff refund, lifting adjusted earnings per share to $4.11 against a $2.34 consensus. Walmart was eligible for about $2.9 billion in refunds and is putting much of it into price rollbacks. Apple expects foreign exchange to cut revenue growth, a drag a stronger dollar would deepen.
