Requirements
  • Experience in the audio or hearing aid industries.
  • Experience evaluating hearing aid performance using industry-standard equipment such as KEMAR and ear and cheek simulators.
  • Experience with acoustic data analysis techniques including spectral analysis and speech intelligibility metrics.
  • Experience authoring and tuning digital signal processing algorithms in Python.
  • Experience translating audiograms, user preferences, and physical hearing aid configurations into customized user configurations.
  • Experience authoring and tuning classical hearing aid signal processing algorithms, such as noise reduction, feedback cancellation, wide dynamic range compression, beamforming, and limiting.
  • Working knowledge of physical acoustics and psychoacoustics.
  • Practical experience making acoustic measurements with head-worn audio devices.
  • Ability to read, write, and modify Python code supporting modeling, testing, and interaction with embedded algorithms.
  • Experience communicating with non-engineers and translating their feedback into signal-processing-layer hypotheses.
Responsibilities
  • Work across digital signal processing, machine learning, and audiology teams to understand how product configuration translates into perceived sound quality and how to improve it without impacting speech intelligibility.
  • Evaluate hearing aid and competitor-device performance through critical listening and acoustic measurement.
  • Define test protocols and analyze acoustic data using spectral analysis and speech intelligibility metrics.
  • Use acoustic measurement and critical listening to benchmark competitor devices and improve the product.
  • Author and tune digital signal processing algorithms in Python.
  • Interact frequently with the audiology team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Embedded development experience is nice to have.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB is sufficient, with an expectation to transition to Python as the daily programming language.

Fortell develops AI-powered hearing aids to help adults with hearing loss, especially in noisy environments. Its Fortell AI Hearing Aid uses spatial-AI algorithms and a low-latency custom chip to separate speech from background noise in real time, with control via an iPhone app and remote audiology support. The product stands out through real-time speech separation, custom silicon, and a premium direct-to-consumer model that includes extensive audiological care bundled with the device. The company aims to improve speech understanding in challenging acoustic settings and to grow its network of clinics while advancing its AI-powered hearing technology.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Spatial AI and 9.2 dB signal-to-noise advantage outperform Phonak, enabling superior speech clarity in noisy settings.
  • Expansion to Greenwich, Palm Beach, and Boston clinics will increase market access and user capacity beyond NYC.
  • App version 1.26.1 added equalizer for calls and streaming, improving user experience and adoption potential.

What critics are saying

  • Deep-pocketed competitors will replicate Fortell’s spatial-AI and chip tech within 12–18 months due to slow rollout.
  • Lux Labs and Flutter Labs will release $2,500 AI hearing aid with 85% performance by Q4 2027, eroding premium pricing.
  • Single NYC clinic and 5-year care contract create capacity bottleneck, limiting scaling to 2,000 users/year by 2028.

What makes Fortell unique

  • Fortell uses proprietary Spatial AI and custom chip to separate speech from noise in real time.
  • Device eliminates 98% background noise and delivers 10x more words understood than leading AI hearing aids.
  • Includes 3-year warranty and 5 years of audiological care with remote audiologist support via iPhone app.
