Requirements
- Completion of a provincially recognized three-year Technician or Technologist program is required.
- C.Tech., C.E.T., or eligibility to obtain designation is required.
- A minimum of four years of experience in laboratory materials testing is required.
- A minimum of two years of experience supervising laboratory operations or technical staff is required.
- Experience with Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories-accredited laboratory operations is required.
- Valid Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories and Canadian Standards Association certifications, or eligibility to obtain them, are required.
- Strong understanding of American Society for Testing and Materials, Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories, Canadian Standards Association, Ontario Ministry of Transportation, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and other specifications and standards related to soil, aggregate, concrete, and rock testing is required.
- Ability to lift and handle samples up to 25 kilograms on a regular basis is required.
- A valid driver’s licence is required.
- Eligibility to obtain security clearance is required.
- Strong technical writing skills and the ability to present information clearly and concisely are required.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, staff, samples, deadlines, and reporting requirements are required.
- Understanding of civil engineering, construction, laboratory quality systems, and occupational health and safety requirements is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, quality control, and continuous improvement is required.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and coordinate laboratory and field technicians and technologists.
- Manage daily laboratory operations, including sample flow, testing priorities, scheduling, workload planning, and turnaround times.
- Oversee and conduct laboratory testing, including compressive strength testing of concrete, soil and aggregate gradation, hydrometer analysis, Atterberg limits, Proctor testing, consolidation testing, Swedish fall cone testing, shear strength testing, unconfined compressive strength testing of rock cores, and other materials testing as required.
- Ensure testing is completed in accordance with applicable Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories, Canadian Standards Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, Ontario Ministry of Transportation, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and project-specific requirements.
- Maintain accurate sample logs for concrete cylinders, aggregate samples, soil samples, and rock samples.
- Review and verify test data, calculations, worksheets, factual reports, summaries, data sheets, and graphs prior to submission.
- Oversee the quality of work completed by field and laboratory staff, including data verification, quality checks, and work process audits.
- Support laboratory accreditation, proficiency testing, correlation programs, audits, and Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories assessments.
- Maintain laboratory records, including calibration certificates, registration certificates, equipment manuals, applicable standards, and quality documentation.
- Coordinate communication between clients, project managers, field staff, laboratory technicians, and management.
- Assist with technician scheduling, utilization tracking, timesheet review, and resource planning.
- Assist with laboratory budgeting, invoicing, accounts payable and accounts receivable, and financial tracking for laboratory services.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated, and in proper working condition.
- Routinely inspect the laboratory and work areas to maintain safe, clean, and efficient working conditions.
- Train field and laboratory staff on testing procedures, quality requirements, equipment use, documentation, and health and safety practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, quality control, and work processes.
- Support business development and assist with the preparation of materials testing quotations and proposals as required.
- Apply and promote the employer’s health and safety rules and safe work practices.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
- Professional Engineer designation is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with spoken and written English is required.

- Ability to complete reports and other technical documents clearly.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
