Requirements
- MD or equivalent and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
- Knowledge of Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, Canadian Standards Association standards, and Workers' Compensation Board processes.
- Clinical decision-making grounded in regulatory and job-demand requirements.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
- Understanding of industrial work environments and exposure risks.
- Strong communication skills and ability to provide clear, defensible medical opinions.
Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-placement, periodic, and return-to-work medical assessments.
- Determine medical fitness based on job demands, exposure profiles, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide clear, defensible medical opinions that support safe job placement and employer compliance.
- Complete safety-sensitive evaluations for high-risk industries, including mining, construction, energy, and transportation.
- Oversee medical-surveillance programs required under Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, including noise-induced hearing-loss monitoring, respiratory-protection programs, hazard-specific monitoring for silica, asbestos, lead, and chemicals, and confined-space and working-at-heights medical clearance.
- Interpret surveillance results and provide recommendations consistent with Canadian Standards Association, Occupational Health and Safety, and industry standards.
- Assess work-related injuries and illnesses with a focus on early intervention and functional recovery.
- Provide medical guidance to employers, the Workers' Compensation Board, and case managers.
- Support graduated return-to-work planning and restrictions based on functional capacity.
- Provide medical oversight for audiometry, spirometry, vision screening, drug and alcohol testing including Medical Review Officer review if certified, and respirator fit testing.
- Ensure occupational testing meets regulatory and clinical quality standards.
- Maintain accurate, defensible medical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons standards.
- Participate in policy development, clinical audits, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Provide medical leadership to multidisciplinary occupational-health teams.
- Consult with employers, safety professionals, and human-resources teams on occupational-health risks.
- Provide guidance on job-demands analysis, exposure control, and workforce-health trends.
- Support education initiatives related to workplace health and safety.
Desired Qualifications
- Additional training in occupational health, such as OEM or CCFP-OH, is an asset.
- Experience in occupational medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, or internal medicine.
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, if not already licensed.
