  • A current Michigan Registered Nurse license in good standing is required.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
  • Two years of clinical experience is required.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise caring for neonatal or pediatric critical-care patients is required.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills are required.
  • The ability to mentor, coach, and support nursing staff is required.
  • Previous NICU and/or PICU nursing experience is preferred.
  • Previous charge nurse, preceptor, educator, lead nurse, or other formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
  • Experience coordinating patient flow, staffing, or operational activities is preferred.
  • National specialty certification related to neonatal or pediatric nursing is preferred.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
  • Advanced nursing-specific certification is preferred.
  • Department-specific requirements may include PALS, BLS, ACLS, and similar certifications.
  • For Unit Coordinators in Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum at BMH and BBC, Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, conflict-resolution ability, and the ability to work as a team leader are required.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability is required.
  • The ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and demonstrate accountability for assignments is required.
  • The ability to use job-related software such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and operational support for the NICU team.
  • Serve as a mentor, coach, and clinical resource for nursing staff.
  • Promote patient safety, quality outcomes, and evidence-based practice.
  • Assist with staff development, engagement, and retention initiatives.
  • Facilitate communication between staff, physicians, and leadership.
  • Support unit operations, staffing coordination, and workflow management.
  • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment focused on patient and family experiences.
  • Function as the clinical liaison among staff, physicians, and management, providing continuity of day-to-day leadership.
  • Maintain unit standards and encourage a team environment as a role model, mentor, coach, and resource person.
  • Assist managers in attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, performance monitoring and evaluation, problem-solving, employee counseling, staffing, payroll, and budget duties.
  • Serve as a contact for internal and external customers.
  • Maintain a safe environment of care that supports positive customer service and meets quality standards; implement new processes and monitor existing processes.
  • Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care and conduct or facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations, including patient placements and staff assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for personnel staffing and scheduling, ensuring assignments use personnel appropriately.
  • Coordinate department staff schedules with manager input as needed and adjust staffing daily to meet needs, including volume changes and call-ins.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at organizational committees and meetings.
  • Manage staffing levels to help the department achieve its budget and participate in projecting staffing needs and developing staffing plans with the manager or director.
  • Approve or deny paid time off and communicate with staff about scheduling requests and issues in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Act as a clinical expert resource, mentor staff, maintain positive relationships, and build teamwork across the healthcare team.
  • Maintain knowledge of guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards, and provide input into them.
  • Act as the first responder for clinical and service-recovery issues and answer staff questions about job performance and departmental processes.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to personnel accountable to the nurse manager.
  • Provide ongoing job-performance feedback, monitor staff performance day to day, and work with the manager on personal development plans, follow-up, and mentoring.
  • Evaluate personnel performance, collate peer input for evaluations, communicate staff behavior and performance issues to the manager, and participate in employee discipline and evaluation processes as assigned.
  • Co-facilitate shared-governance planning and meetings and mentor the staff chair of shared governance.
  • Facilitate charge nurse and other unit meetings, reporting to the nurse manager.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including assisting the manager with interviews.
  • Create and support an environment that encourages and values innovation and creativity.
  • For Pre-Admission Surgery/Endo Screening, provide patient contact by telephone only.
  • Unit Coordinators may cover multiple locations across the organization.
