Mondrian, Kandinsky works to lead Christie's, Sotheby's October auctions.

Mondrian, Kandinsky works to lead Christie's, Sotheby's October auctions. Two significant artworks, Piet Mondrian's Composition III (1920) and Wassily Kandinsky's Das bunte Leben (1907), are set to headline Christie's 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale on October 14. Sotheby's will offer a marble torso of a Roman emperor and an Augustan marble portrait head of a girl in its Magnum Opus Evening Auction in New York on October 21. Mondrian's Composition III, dating from a pivotal year in the artist's development when he established Neo-Plasticism, is estimated to sell for between £20m and £30m. This marks its auction debut and its first public exhibition in 25 years, according to Christie's. The 1920 work is one of only a few from that year still in private hands; Mondrian produced just eight major paintings in 1920, with five now in museum collections including the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The painting was previously owned by Modernist architect and collector Armand P. Bartos and his wife, Celeste. Kandinsky's Das bunte Leben, estimated at over $30m, returns to the market following its restitution in June 2023 to the heirs of Emanuel Albert Lewenstein and Hedwig Lewenstein-Weyermann, who lost possession of it during the Holocaust. The Dutch-Jewish couple acquired the painting in 1927. After the 1940 invasion of the Netherlands by German forces, the work, then on loan to the Stedelijk Museum, was removed and sold at auction in October 1940. Collector Salomon B. Slijper purchased it, and in 1972, Bayerische Landesbank acquired it from Slijper's family. The painting was on long-term loan to Munich's Lenbachhaus from 1973, remaining on public display for more than 50 years until the Lewenstein heirs successfully sued for its return in 2017. Sotheby's Magnum Opus sale, featuring works from an anonymous private collection of more than 900 pieces, includes a marble torso of a Roman emperor from the Julio-Claudian period (first half of the first century AD), estimated between $8m and $12m. Believed to depict either Augustus, Tiberius, or Claudius, the torso was last offered at Sotheby's New York in 2010, where it sold for $7.36m with fees against an estimate of $800,000-$1.2m. Also at Sotheby's, an Augustan marble portrait head of a girl, dating from 27 BC to AD 14, carries an estimate of $2.5m-$3.5m. The sculpture is thought to be based on the likeness of Livia, Emperor Augustus's wife. It was formerly part of the collection of the noble House of Schwarzenberg and last sold at a 2014 Sotheby's New York auction for $2.2m with fees. USA Art News previously reported: The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris opens an exhibition today, October 9, spotlighting collector Gustave Fayet and ten of his Van Gogh paintings. New scientific analysis of Claude Monet's 1873 painting "The Luncheon" at the Musée d'Orsay suggests a possible self-portrait hidden in an earlier layer. A 1948 painting by Winston Churchill, Amaryllis Lily, originally gifted to his daughter, will be auctioned at Christie's on October 21 for an estimated

Works by van Gogh and Cézanne up for sale in Sotheby's $450 million auction.

Works by van Gogh and Cézanne up for sale in Sotheby's $450 million auction. PUBLISHED: September 30, 2026 at 3:12 PM CDT UPDATED: September 30, 2026 at 3:21 PM CDT By JILL LAWLESS LONDON (AP) - A dozen Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks collectively valued at almost half a billion dollars are going up for auction after sitting unseen for decades in a fabled private collection in South America. Sotheby's auction house said Wednesday that works by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne are expected to smash records for the artists in the Nov. 18 sale in New York. If so, it would be the latest sign that, in uncertain times, ultrawealthy art collectors are seeking security in masterpieces. The paintings come from a collection amassed by the late Argentine art collector Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and her sugar magnate husband, Carlos Pedro Blaquier, and are being sold by their children. They include van Gogh's landscape "Châtaigniers en fleurs," (Chestnut Trees in Flower) estimated at $180 million, and Cézanne's portrait "Arlequin," which carries an estimate of $120 million. Neither has been seen in public for half a century. Helena Newman, Sotheby's head of Impressionist and modern art, said the collection was like a "mini- Musée D'Orsay," the Paris museum that holds one of the world's greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks. "In my 30-plus years at Sotheby's, I've never had the privilege of handling a collection of quite this content and caliber," she said. Newman said van Gogh's painting of flowering chestnut trees captures the "explosion of energy and vitality" the artist felt after his release from a psychiatric asylum in May 1890. He took his own life two months later. Cornell's reckonings with fraternities haven't prevented misconduct Watch More The Cézanne portrait is one of four paintings of the artist's son dressed as the Harlequin figure from clowning. The other three are in major museums. Also in the collection are Parisian cityscapes by Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a horse-racing image by Edgar Degas and a boating scene by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, all valued in the tens of millions of dollars. Art expert Philip Hook, a former Sotheby's auctioneer, said the collection "really is the stuff of legend," because the collectors did not loan out the works for exhibitions. "No one knew really what was in it. So now, for this to be revealed, is tremendously exciting," Hook said. "They came out with a collection that, rather cleverly, is focused on getting one representative work by each of the major names (of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art), and that is incredibly difficult to do," he added. "They succeeded with huge, huge style and success." Newman said sale is likely to attract global attention, with potential buyers ranging from American tech billionaires to well-endowed Middle Eastern institutions and rich collectors from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. "In times where there's a lot of global macro geopolitical uncertainty, it's almost like there's a return to really established, tried and tested" works that are "unquestionably great," Newman said. "(This) museum-quality Impressionist collection... is pretty rare."
