About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Architecture, Planning, or a related discipline is required.
  • Five or more years of experience in a planning and design oversight role.
  • Familiarity with BIM concepts, standards, and workflows, such as general awareness of ISO 19650 or equivalent; hands-on technical modeling expertise is not required, but the ability to direct and evaluate outsourced technical BIM resources is essential.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret construction documents.
  • Broad knowledge of construction and building systems, including structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Working knowledge of CAFM or similar space and facilities data systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and to translate technical BIM and data concepts for non-technical audiences and leadership.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office, Teams, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively and courteously with faculty, administrative staff, planning offices, design consultants, and outsourced technical vendors.
  • Ability to work effectively with user groups, internal staff, and outside consultants, and to work under tight deadlines on multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills and careful attention to detail, with initiative to resolve problems independently, particularly during the program's early build-out phase.
  • Must provide a cover letter to be considered.
  • Must work onsite at least three days per week; when working at a non-Harvard location, must work in a Harvard-registered state.
Responsibilities
  • Execute project-level design management in support of planning and design strategy set by the Senior Director.
  • Negotiate and prepare standard Harvard University agreements for design and planning consulting.
  • Work with an Operations-wide team to develop and update campus-wide space, interior, and architectural standards.
  • Supervise vendors, outsourced technical consultants, and student interns as assigned.
  • Manage assigned capital and Improvements & Alterations projects through study, schematic design, and design development phases.
  • Support development of the annual and multi-year Capital Budget by defining, planning, and scoping potential projects.
  • Work with campus departments on space-related requests, and develop and enforce campus design and specification standards.
  • Develop architectural test fits and concept viability studies as needed.
  • Facilitate user discussions and ensure architects' plans meet the school's functional and aesthetic needs.
  • Work with project managers to support project design and delivery, advising on design-related objectives from preconstruction through project closeout.
  • Collaborate with the Interiors and Furniture Manager and outside design consultants on a coordinated furniture, finish, and interior design process.
  • Coordinate interior design and sustainable-material discussions with Harvard and external resources and consultants.
  • Prepare reports, analyses, and presentation materials related to project design management and BIM program status.
  • Lead establishment of an HBS BIM program by defining scope, data standards, and information architecture for space and facilities data in coordination with HUPAD and applicable university standards.
  • Select, contract, and manage outsourced technical BIM vendors responsible for model development, data conversion, and ongoing technical support; review vendor deliverables for quality and consistency.
  • Partner with the Associate Director of Furniture and Moves to integrate and enhance the existing CAFM system, MRI CenterStone, without duplicating it.
  • Establish BIM governance, including naming conventions, model-update protocols, access permissions, and a long-term maintenance plan.
  • Coordinate project closeout documentation across capital and Improvements & Alterations projects, ensuring as-built drawings, submittal records, O&M manuals, warranties, and other project materials are captured, organized, and entered into BIM and CAFM systems as the authoritative project record.
  • Incorporate preliminary BIM guideline documentation developed by the Planning and Design student intern into the formal program as a starting reference.
  • Monitor developments in BIM standards and technology relevant to campus facilities management and recommend program adjustments as the field evolves.
  • In a later phase, extend BIM and space-data governance to support space-utilization and occupancy analytics, including badge-scan data and dashboard and visualization work, in partnership with the Senior Director.
  • Build trust and collaboration by being present on site and engaging directly with colleagues and constituents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD is preferred.
  • A master's degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating and managing vendor and consultant contracts.
