Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required unless working under a student permit.
  • Certification by the Indiana State Department of Health as a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing is required; out-of-state CNAs and graduating CNA students may work for 120 days while awaiting Indiana certification.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of programs such as Excel and Word are required.
  • A thorough understanding of safe and effective nursing practices within Indiana is required.
  • Ability to assist licensed nurses with procedures within the nurse aide scope of practice is required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, function independently, and make independent decisions when circumstances warrant is required.
  • Personal integrity and the ability to deal tactfully with residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and personnel are required.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel is required.
  • Judgment in prioritizing tasks, duties, and responsibilities according to established standards, policies, and procedures is required.
  • Ability to be discreet, protect confidential information, and comply with corporate compliance and HIPAA requirements is required.
  • Patience, a cheerful disposition, enthusiasm, and willingness to handle residents according to their maturity and physical functioning level are required.
  • Ability to adhere to a professional code of ethics is required.
  • Ability to communicate information about a resident’s condition to appropriate staff members is required.
Responsibilities
  • Receive and follow written and verbal care assignments and provide daily resident care.
  • Assist residents with bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, skin care, grooming, nail care, and dressing.
  • Feed residents, provide bedside water and snacks, and transfer residents to and from dining areas in compliance with nutritional plans of care.
  • Check catheters and provide catheter care as assigned by a nurse.
  • Assist bedfast and comatose residents with turning, positioning, exercising, transferring, and ambulation according to facility protocol.
  • Answer resident call lights and respond to requests for assistance promptly according to facility policy.
  • Maintain resident rooms by making beds, changing linens, cleaning bedside tables, and organizing personal belongings.
  • Observe and report unusual changes in residents’ appetite, skin condition, or behavior according to facility policy.
  • Offer emotional support and actively listen to residents to help build trust and promote independence in daily living.
  • Maintain confidentiality of residents and their care and protect resident rights and privacy.
  • Report and document resident or visitor incidents, accidents, complaints, and allegations using the designated occurrence reporting system.
  • Take and monitor vital signs, intake and output, weights, and meal consumption as assigned by the staff nurse.
  • Complete functional maintenance plans, 24-hour reports, CNA flow sheets, intake logs, bowel movement flow records, behavior management records, toileting plans, shower lists, skin care audits, cleaning schedules, protective-device records, and other assigned documentation.
  • Use protective devices such as side rails, Geri chairs, and Posey devices appropriately under staff-nurse direction.
  • Follow emergency protocols for crash carts, resident codes, fire safety, missing residents, tornado preparation, violent residents, Wander Guard alarms, door alarms, and other facility policies.
  • Report witnessed or suspected abuse to the nurse manager immediately.
  • Follow infection-control and universal-precautions procedures.
  • Follow equipment-cleaning schedules and return equipment to its proper area after use.
  • Maintain nursing-service work areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the staff nurse or designee.
