Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant certificate or diploma program is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training for Los Angeles City is required; if not held at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
  • The role requires obtaining blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods and processing specimens according to established guidelines.
Responsibilities
  • Determine patient care needs and direct patients accordingly.
  • Prepare patient charts before appointments, including required x-rays and pertinent laboratory work, and arrange special equipment when needed.
  • Set up examination rooms, assist physicians with examinations and minor clinical procedures, and monitor patient flow.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and obtain and record vital signs and medication lists.
  • Ensure healthcare delivery areas are stocked, organized, cleaned, and disinfected.
  • Maintain files and records and oversee equipment and office supply inventory.
  • Photocopy, collate, fax, mail, read, and prioritize incoming mail, and handle or route it appropriately.
  • Ensure physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by the appropriate staff.
  • Provide coverage and relief for coworkers and communicate patient status during coverage.
  • Record patient information in charts and electronic health records according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to clinician testing requests, considering patient age appropriately.
  • Receive and screen specimens for acceptability under established guidelines.
  • Process, distribute, or package received specimens.
  • Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by physicians as needed.
  • Maintain patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality and comply with infection-control and safety policies.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience, with combined education and experience accepted as a substitute for minimum experience, is preferred.
  • Experience in an acute-care setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of specialty medical terminology is preferred.
  • Familiarity with word processing, IDX, GECB, COR Schuynet, Cerner, ProSolv, EPF, AS400, and scheduling software is preferred.
  • Spanish language skills are preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
