View

Protocol Behavioral Health delivers oncology-focused mental health care by partnering with oncology clinics and cancer centers to integrate behavioral health services into cancer care. Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Protocol launched in February 2026 and already serves oncology practices across seven states.
  • Affiliated Oncologists opened Illinois access in June 2026, expanding into Chicagoland.
  • Patients are reached within 48 hours, a sharp service-level advantage for clinics.

What critics are saying

  • Protocol depends on oncology referral volumes; slow clinic adoption throttles revenue growth in 2026.
  • Payer reimbursement disputes can choke margins when behavioral-health billing crosses oncology contracts.
  • Bigger incumbents like Optum, CVS, and OncoHealth can bundle care and squeeze partnerships.

What makes Protocol Behavioral Health unique

  • Protocol embeds psycho-oncology clinicians inside oncology practices, not standalone teletherapy.
  • NCCN recognized Collaborative Care Model for oncology distress management in January 2026.
  • Ryan Powers, Rick Dean, and Nate Walcker bring operator and oncology credibility.

Protocol Behavioral Health expands to Midwest with Affiliated Oncologists partnership

Protocol Behavioral Health has expanded into Illinois through a partnership with Affiliated Oncologists, bringing oncology-specific behavioural health services to cancer patients across the greater Chicago area. This marks Protocol's entry into the Midwest market. More than half of cancer patients experience anxiety, depression or trauma during treatment, yet fewer than 10% receive behavioural health support. Protocol's model integrates licensed clinicians trained in psycho-oncology into oncology practices, with patients reached within 48 hours of referral. The partnership uses the Collaborative Care Model, which the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines recognised in January 2026 as standard of care for distress management in oncology. Affiliated Oncologists operates 45 medical providers across the South Chicago region. Protocol plans additional Midwest market launches this summer.

Protocol Behavioral Health launches to integrate mental health care into US cancer treatment

Protocol Behavioral Health has launched to provide integrated, oncology-specific mental health care directly within cancer clinics nationwide. The company partners with oncologists to deliver evidence-based behavioural health support coordinated with cancer treatment. More than 50% of cancer patients experience anxiety, depression or trauma during treatment, yet fewer than 10% receive behavioural health support. Protocol addresses this gap by embedding oncology-trained mental health specialists into care teams, with patients seen within 48 hours of referral. Founded by Jack Fitzgibbons, clinical psychologist Dr Cara Bohon, and Mark Ahern, Protocol currently operates with oncology practices across five US states. The company's model aligns with insurance reimbursement, allowing most patients to use existing coverage. Protocol is backed by Juxtapose.
