About the job

Requirements
  • Technical foundation in subsurface through a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering, geological engineering, or geoscience, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in energy research, technical evaluation, or energy equity research and investing.
  • Fluency in production forecasting, including explaining what a b factor above 1.0 implies for a forecast and when to override it.
  • Fluency in economics, including NPV, IRR, payout, price decks, CAPEX tiering, and differentials, and ability to explain what conclusions are sensitive to.
  • Ability to build corporate models from well-level forecasts through cash flow, NAV, and a valuation view.
  • Comfort with public filings and reserve reports, including knowing where to scrutinize them.
  • Hands-on experience with commercial well databases such as S&P Global, Enverus, TGS, or similar, including their failure modes.
  • Ability to write long-form technical research that sustains a thesis and includes an auditable methodology appendix.
  • Ability to condense a full study into a two-page summary without losing its defensibility.
  • Work samples the candidate can claim, such as published research, investor materials, papers, or internal studies that changed a decision; a team byline is acceptable if the candidate identifies their contribution.
  • Willingness to be the named author and be cited, quoted, and publicly challenged.
Responsibilities
  • Build well-study populations from commercial and public data, and define screening criteria including vintage floors, minimum lateral length, completion-intensity thresholds, minimum production history, and re-stimulation exclusions.
  • Publish the screening waterfall for every study, showing how the population was reduced from unfiltered to final and what each criterion removed.
  • Identify data-quality issues such as null proppant, perforated versus drilled lateral length, re-fracs with two completion events booked under one EUR, and operators misassigned after acquisitions.
  • Run decline curve analysis across hundreds to thousands of wells, including Arps parameters, b factor, Di, terminal decline, and forecast quality control at scale.
  • Build type curves and P10/P50/P90 bands, and normalize EUR to a common lateral length so rankings are not simply a proxy for drilled length.
  • Run full-cycle economics using vintage-tiered and lateral-length-based CAPEX, fixed and variable OPEX, flat and strip pricing, NPV, IRR, and payout, with sensitivities when conclusions depend on price.
  • Build corporate models from well-level work, including production forecasts by asset, capital programs, cash flow, leverage, hedge books, NAV, and inventory depth at various price decks.
  • Reconcile models against public disclosures by reviewing 10-Ks, reserve reports, investor decks, and transcripts, and explain where and why the candidate's numbers differ.
  • Develop valuation framing, relative comparisons across peer groups, and views on what must be true for the market to be right or wrong.
  • Perform spatial analysis and cartography in QGIS or ArcGIS, including subplay delineation, EUR interpolation surfaces, permit and lateral overlays, and acreage and inventory footprints by operator.
  • Tie results to geology and geography, including subplay, TVD, thickness, and pressure regime, so conclusions reflect the rock as well as the operator.
  • Write full studies of 20–50 pages with analysis, exhibits, and a reproducible methodology appendix.
  • Create two-page summaries of full studies while preserving their defensible conclusions.
  • Own layout, charts, footnotes, and caveats in both full studies and summaries.
  • Publish 1–2 studies per month and produce responsive pieces when the market moves; set cadence based on completing the full study.
  • Organize models and datasets so coverage can be refreshed rather than rebuilt.
  • Present at conferences and webinars, including URTeC, SPE ATCE, NAPE, and energy investor conferences, and support executive and investor conversations where the research opens the door.
  • Work with marketing on research distribution and with the executive team on future coverage priorities.
  • Provide specific feedback to product based on workflow friction encountered while using the platform.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with ComboCurve or deep familiarity with a comparable forecasting and economics platform such as ARIES, PHDWin, or Val Nav.
  • Sell-side, buy-side, or data and analytics research experience, and an existing audience that reads the candidate's work.
  • Production-level QGIS or ArcGIS skills.
  • Python or SQL for data preparation, quality control, and batch work; BigQuery or similar is a plus.
  • Multi-basin exposure, including Permian, Haynesville, Eagle Ford, Bakken, DJ, Appalachia, or Uinta.
  • Visual and design judgment, or ability to execute with tools such as Figma, Illustrator, or equivalent.
