The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent registered nurse that will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) uses:

The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area.

Essential Functions:

Under the supervision of a clinical nurse manager, this position will provide nursing care to patients, and:

Conducts systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission or encounter to discharge across the care continuum to ensure patient safety, collaborating with the healthcare team, patient and family; care addresses all aspects of the individual and family, including age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial and patient preferences and proactively uses safety surveillance to prevent adverse outcomes
Independently administers medications per licensure authority, assesses and reassesses the effects of these medications, and documents administration in a timely manner per policies, procedures and regulatory requirements; consistently adheres to patient safety guidelines regarding all aspects of medication administration
In collaboration with patient and family, plans care using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards within the nursing interventions and outcomes framework and national patient safety goals; constructs individualized, age-specific plans for optimal patient and family outcomes, as appropriate to the practice setting; incorporates data from the multi-disciplinary care team into the plan of care to assure continuity and appropriate patient teaching
In collaboration with patient and family, identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on subjective and objective assessment data, patient safety considerations, patient and family goals and preferences, and nursing interventions and the medical plan of care
Implements nursing care interventions to meet patient and family center health care needs. Demonstrates competent skills, appropriate clinical judgments and chain of command to promote patient safety and reach planned care goals and outcomes
Competently and consistently assesses, conducts and evaluates the outcomes of patient and family teaching, from admission, or episode of care, to discharge, teaching reflects sensitivity to age, learning needs and cultural background

University of Louisville gifted US$4.5M for lung health studies. The school has been continually strengthening its role in respiratory research 3 hours ago Kentucky records the highest rate of new lung cancer cases in the United States. This fact makes every advance at the University of Louisville (U of L) matter more than ever. The school is steadily building a stronger presence in the fight against the disease that hits the state hardest. Early this month, philanthropic organisation The Gibbs Foundation gave the university US$4.5 million for lung research in the School of Medicine. The gift completes a five-year pledge the foundation made in 2022. That earlier promise committed the organisation to multi-year support, and the latest sum turns the funding into a lasting resource. It will support ongoing work on lung disease, better ways to care for patients and the training of future researchers. Part of the money will help advance breath analysis technology. The method is the same as that employed in OneBreath, the test created by Breath Diagnostics. This company spun out from the institution with U of L surgery professor Victor van Berkel co-founding it. OneBreath captures compounds in a single exhaled breath and analyses them with laboratory equipment to detect molecular signs linked to disease or risk. Researchers plan to use it to predict which heart surgery patients face a higher chance of developing pneumonia afterwards. The FDA recently granted the platform Breakthrough Device Designation for this exact purpose, giving the company priority guidance as it moves the test toward wider clinical use. "Longer term, this technology will help emergency physicians rapidly distinguish conditions like pneumonia, emphysema, heart failure and pulmonary embolism," said U of L President Gerry Bradley. The new funding gift - which will also advance a negative-pressure system for infected lungs called ex vivo perfusion and transplant research - builds on other recent steps that raise the university's profile in this field. In late August, U of L Health finished building its US$25 million Brown Cancer Center in Bullitt County. The centre opens to patients later this month and will treat lung cancer among its first cases, while also housing clinical trials, specialist care and research aimed at rural communities across Kentucky. At the end of March, University of Louisville scientist Kavitha Yaddanapudi received a National Institutes of Health award valued at roughly US$353,000 for the coming year to study ways of overcoming treatment resistance in non-small cell lung cancer. Van Berkel, whose earlier research helped launch the breath test now receiving greater support, also appeared on the university's Science Behind the Headlines podcast in November. There he educated listeners about Kentucky's high lung cancer rates, the value of early checks and advances in surgical techniques. Taken together, these recent developments show how the University of Louisville is expanding its role. For a state that still leads the nation in new lung cancer cases and ranks second for adult smoking, these moves offer practical hope that greater awareness, better detection, treatment and training will reach more people sooner.

Mom of three learns to walk again with help from new technology. After cancerous tumors and surgery on her spine, a Kentucky mom is using a new rehabilitation machine to relearn how to walk. Kaycie Jackson, a mother of three, was told she had two tumors on her spine in 2024. She had surgery to remove them, but it left her wheelchair-bound. While Jackson is cancer-free, she's still fighting an uphill battle. "I couldn't even bathe my twins or anything like that in the beginning, because I couldn't even walk. I was in a wheelchair, had to use a Hoyer lift at home," Jackson said. "I learned to never take anything for granted because it could be snatched from me in a blink of an eye." When she began her rehabilitation journey at the University of Louisville Health's Frazier Rehab in Kentucky, she initially struggled to move her legs without assistance. Now, she is walking, side-stepping, and even throwing a ball while walking, thanks to UofL Health's Zero-G 3D Body Weight Support System. UofL Health physical therapist Lindsay Nalley said the benefits of the machine, which is the only one of its kind in Kentucky, are that it protects patients' balance while providing varying levels of support to help them gradually regain strength. "With Kaycie, we've done lots of challenges outside of the Zero-G environment. But I'm really able to get creative and find difficult ways to challenge her in that safe environment," said Nalley. Jackson said she's slowly getting her life back. She was recently able to drive her kids for the first time since surgery. Small wins like that, she said, are what push her to keep going. "I've learned to never take anything for granted because it could be snatched from me in a blink of an eye," said Jackson. UofL Health saves $1.5M monthly on anesthesia. By Zarina Othman August 31, 2026 UofL Health has cut its monthly anesthesia costs by $1.5 million after standardizing operations across 59 operating rooms in Louisville. The health system also recaptured more than 517,000 minutes of blocked OR time and handled 400 additional cases year-over-year, according to officials who spoke with Healthcare Innovation. Finding the problems. The initiative grew from frustration with inconsistent scheduling practices. Dr. Chad Mathis, chief medical officer at UofL Health-Louisville, said the system was not trusting data coming out of its electronic medical records. "There were inconsistent ways that we were measuring things at each location," he explained. Those gaps created ripple effects across staffing, utilization, and the bottom line. Separate scheduling mechanisms at different sites made it hard to move cases efficiently or predict block availability. Some surgeons held time they were not using while others struggled to find open slots. Building a new system. UofL Health partnered with LeanTaaS and deployed the iQueue platform. The health system also centralized its OR scheduling team and worked with IT partners to create a single standardized booking form. A steering committee made up of representatives from across the organization defined key parameters: prime-time utilization thresholds, turnover expectations, and block release rules. Mathis said that committee became essential for working through pushback from doctors who were protective of their scheduled time. "We made a conscious decision to decrease locums' coverage, which was an exorbitant expense between the anesthesiologists and the CRNAs," Mathis said. "Then we were able to maximize our block utilization." Once the block structure changed, staff began releasing unused time. Other surgeons could then book those slots, which helped build buy-in across the medical staff. "Once those blocks are released, people are coming back into the operating room and finding time to book their cases that they couldn't get otherwise," Mathis said. Measuring the results. Case volume grew 4 percent year-over-year, adding more than 400 cases to the schedule. Primetime utilization climbed 3 percent. The system recaptured 517,875 minutes of blocked time that would otherwise have sat empty. The biggest financial win came from anesthesia. By filling released blocks with additional cases, the health system reduced reliance on costly locum tenens coverage. That brought monthly anesthesia spending down by $1.5 million. The gains did not come without friction. Mathis said he was surprised by how long it took to convince some surgeons to release their time. The steering committee worked through those concerns over months, emphasizing transparency and data access. Advice for other health systems. Mathis recommends that leaders pursue such changes by engaging surgeons, IT staff, and vendors early. Consulting the CEO matters too. At UofL Health, Dr. Smith launched the project when he served as chief medical officer and has stayed involved as CEO. "Having that type of leadership and partnership really is key to making this work," Mathis said. The health system continues to monitor utilization and adjust block schedules based on demand. Regular conversations with surgeons about their data and ongoing steering committee governance keep the system aligned with actual surgical volume.

August 28, 2026 New facility along I-65 will expand cancer treatment, clinical trials and rural health research while creating 30 jobs. BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. - UofL Health has completed construction of a new $25 million Brown Cancer Center at South Hospital, expanding access to cancer treatment and research for patients across South, Central and Western Kentucky. The 26,440-square-foot, two-story facility, located along the growing Interstate 65 corridor in Bullitt County, is scheduled to begin seeing patients Sept. 14. The project has created 30 new jobs. The facility also will be home to the University of Louisville's new Center for Rural Cancer Education and Research, which will focus on improving cancer prevention, screening, treatment access and patient outcomes in rural Kentucky communities. "This new center is a significant step forward in bringing high-quality cancer care, research and education closer to the people who need it most," Kentucky Sen. Mike Nemes said. "For rural Kentucky families, access to innovative treatments, clinical trials and screenings closer to home can make a real difference." The new center is located directly off I-65 at Exit 121 and is designed to serve as a regional base for extending cancer services throughout Kentucky, particularly in rural areas where patients may otherwise travel significant distances for treatment. Funding support from the Kentucky General Assembly helped make possible the expansion of cancer screenings, education, research and community outreach associated with the project. Gov. Andy Beshear said the investment should allow more Kentuckians to receive cancer treatment closer to where they live. "Because of the new Brown Cancer Center at South Hospital, more Kentuckians facing cancer can get the care they need close to home," Beshear said. "Instead of spending hours in the car driving to and from appointments, they get that time back to spend with their family and friends, doing what they love." The facility includes 16 private dual-purpose infusion and examination rooms, an on-site laboratory, an oncology pharmacy and space dedicated to clinical trials and translational cancer research. A patient resource center will offer services including financial counseling and navigation, psychotherapy and social work, nutritional support, massage therapy, art therapy, wigs and scarves. The center also includes 10 private research offices, video conferencing spaces, a flexible meeting room for support groups and community programs and a patient lounge. The University of Louisville's Center for Rural Cancer Education and Research will use the new location to study cancer outcomes, screening and access to care. Researchers also plan cancer epidemiology studies aimed at better understanding why Kentucky continues to experience some of the nation's highest cancer rates. "With the opening of the $25 million Brown Cancer Center at South Hospital, the University of Louisville and UofL Health aim to take on Kentucky's standing as the state with the highest cancer death rate and provide better access to care for residents of rural communities," UofL President Gerry Bradley said. Kentucky's cancer mortality rate is 175.6 deaths per 100,000 people, according to information provided by UofL Health. More than 10,000 Kentuckians die from cancer annually, while cancer-related health care costs in the state total an estimated $2.74 billion each year. Productivity losses associated with illness and premature deaths add another estimated $3.1 billion annually. Jason Chesney, M.D., Ph.D., director and chief administrative officer of the Brown Cancer Center, said the organization has established a goal of reducing Kentucky's cancer death rate by 50% by 2035. "Our new rural cancer center brings cutting-edge cancer care and lifesaving clinical trials closer to more Kentuckians," Chesney said. The Bullitt County facility becomes the fourth Brown Cancer Center location in Kentucky. In 2023, Brown Cancer Center oncologists treated patients from nearly every Kentucky county, including more than 15,000 outpatient encounters involving patients from South, Central and Western Kentucky. The new location will use a multidisciplinary model involving surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, nurse navigators and other specialists to develop individualized treatment plans. "Today, UofL Health delivers on its commitment to bring the best in cancer care closer to more Kentuckians," UofL Health CEO Jason Smith, M.D., Ph.D., said. "It's a state-of-the-art building, but even more impressive is the Brown Cancer Center team, all working together to ensure our patients are getting the most advanced knowledge and care available." The center is expected to have a significant impact for Bullitt County as well as patients traveling from more distant parts of the state. Bullitt County Judge-Executive Jerry Summers said the importance of having advanced cancer care nearby is personal. Summers recalled traveling repeatedly to downtown Louisville while caring for his father during his battle with cancer. "To now have this exceptional level of care close to home is an absolute blessing," Summers said. Patients with lung, melanoma and gynecologic cancers are scheduled to begin receiving care at the center Sept. 14. UofL Health expects to treat all solid tumor types at the location by November, with blood cancer services beginning in January. The project also represents another major health care investment along the I-65 corridor south of Louisville, an area experiencing continued residential and commercial growth.
