Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • One year of pre-operative, post-anesthesia care unit, and/or medical-surgical nursing experience is required.
  • Current state licensure to practice in good standing is required.
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support or Basic Cardiac Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required when pediatric care is included in the facility's scope of services.
Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes and the physiology associated with anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions.
  • Develop individualized perianesthesia plans of care by communicating patient status, evaluating medical history and surgical plans using PAT anesthesia protocols, interviewing pre-operative patients, reviewing test results, coordinating screening and clearance, educating patients about medications, and implementing safe perioperative care.
  • Operate equipment and machinery safely, report unsafe situations, and advocate for patient safety.
  • Handle specimens according to facility policy and procedures and adhere to standard precautions, including personal protective equipment.
  • Administer medications safely and correctly using the eight rights of medication administration.
  • Perform interventions to maintain wound integrity and tissue perfusion, provide nursing care and monitoring, prevent infection, and manage comorbid conditions.
  • Assess patient or support-person knowledge and provide education regarding psychosocial, nutritional, medical, pain, wound, and procedural management.
  • Involve patients or designated support persons in decisions affecting the perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.
  • Protect patient rights, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality while providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
  • Comply with Universal Protocol and facility site-validation and time-out policies.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes and provide accurate, concise, pertinent hand-off reports.
  • Delegate tasks according to applicable nurse practice acts, nursing-board or professional-registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
  • Document episodes of care completely, accurately, and legibly.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the perioperative team and other stakeholders and serve on a multidisciplinary patient-care team.
  • Participate in quality review, performance improvement projects, performance appraisal processes, team meetings, training, and daily safety huddles.
  • Maintain required competencies, pursue professional growth, demonstrate fiscal responsibility, comply with SCA and facility policies, and perform other assigned duties.

  • Specialty certification in perioperative or perianesthesia nursing is preferred.
