What believers are saying

  • September 21, 2026 FAA launched SMART pilot in Washington, D.C., validating ASI's platform.
  • Reuters on September 21 said Alaska saves roughly one million gallons yearly using Flyways.
  • ASI's April 7, 2026 Joby partnership targets eVTOL integration and live exercises.

What critics are saying

  • FAA initial SMART deployment slips past fall 2026, exposing integration and certification bottlenecks.
  • A SMART software defect inside national airspace would destroy ASI's credibility overnight.
  • Palantir, Thales, RTX, and Peraton can undercut ASI on adjacent FAA programs.

What makes Air Space Intelligence unique

  • ASI shipped Flyways into Alaska Airlines in 2021 before selling FAA SMART in 2026.
  • FAA chose ASI over Palantir and Thales for $875 million, 12-year modernization.
  • Joby, National Grid, and U.S. military work prove dual-use depth across sectors.

AI infrastructure management software startup ASI hits $3B valuation after raising $325M in funding.

AI infrastructure management software startup ASI hits $3B valuation after raising $325M in funding. An artificial intelligence startup called ASI Inc., which builds complex models of air traffic and energy grids, said today it has scored $325 million in a Series C funding, bringing its valuation to a cool $3 billion. The round was led by Spark Capital and joined by participants including Citadel Securities, Craft Ventures, Meritech Capital, Energy Impact Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. The startup, which used to be known as Air Space Intelligence, is an AI company that develops frontier models designed to model physical reality and simulate future scenarios, so that its customers can plan and orchestrate how they operate critical infrastructure in real time. It caters to companies in the aviation, defense and energy industries. For instance, it works with the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines such as United Airlines Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. to simulate and predict what's happening in air space, so they can plan their flight operations. It gives pilots and air traffic controllers a way to plan ahead, reduce delays and increase flight safety and efficiency. In addition, ASI works with the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and others, providing them with AI-driven command-and-control software that's used to manage their daily operations. It also helps companies in the energy sector, including grid operators, enabling them to simulate their grid operations and plan for surges in demand. ASI founder and Chief Executive Phillip Buckendorf (pictured) said he believes that future economic growth will be dependent on giving the people who run the country's most critical infrastructure the ability to predict and forecast scenarios ahead of time, so they can avoid failures. "While the broader tech ecosystem spent hundreds of billions teaching AI to manipulate words and generate text, ASI is deeply focused on AI systems that can manage and control physical assets," he stressed. "This capital ensures ASI scales as America's engine: the automated nervous system keeping the country running." The round follows a significant customer win for ASI. In June, it signed an $875 million multiyear agreement with the FAA to manage future air traffic across the U.S. with its AI platform. Impressively, it won the 12-year contract ahead of bigger and better known rivals such as Palantir Technologies Inc. and Thales SE, which both made aggressive bids, according to Bloomberg. In air traffic scenarios, ASI's system combines data from flight paths, real-time air traffic, weather and controller staffing to predict congestion and devise ways to get around problems and avoid delays. The FAA implemented the software at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC last month, and plans to expand it to all major U.S. airports in future. The contract was a significant win for ASI, making the startup one of only four technology companies to land a federal contract of that size since 2000. Since then, ASI has secured another big contract with the U.S. Army. Earlier this month, it announced it had agreed a five-year deal worth $99 million to supply the military with AI software for its command-and-control program. Another big customer is National Grid USA Service Company Inc., which uses ASI's software for planning purposes. Going forward, ASI said the money from today's round will help it expand further into the aviation, defense and energy sectors and also target new industries such as logistics. It's also planning to grow its research and engineering teams with an eye to expanding the capabilities of its software. Photo: ASI. FAA launches AI system to predict and reduce flight delays.

FAA launches AI system to predict and reduce flight delays. The Federal Aviation Administration is rolling out a new artificial intelligence platform, SMART, to proactively forecast and minimize flight delays by integrating data from airline schedules, weather and airspace conditions. September 21, 2026 Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will announce the FAA's new AI system, called SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories), aimed at cutting flight delays before they start. SMART will begin as a 90-day pilot program in the Washington, D.C. region, covering Reagan National, Dulles, and Baltimore/Washington International airports, with plans for broader deployment. How it works: The cloud-based system gathers airline schedules, weather forecasts, airport capacities, airspace data and operational constraints to predict airport traffic flows and potential conflicts. * The system provides the FAA, airlines and other operators with a real-time, shared overview before departures, allowing for better route and timing planning. * SMART aims to identify issues days, weeks, or even months in advance - enabling solutions before delays and disruptions occur. * Expected benefits include fewer delays and cancellations, lower fuel consumption, faster recoveries from weather events, and increased airspace capacity. Zoom in: SMART is part of the FAA's Flow Management Data and Services (FMDS) program, which will ultimately replace the legacy Traffic Flow Management System. * The FAA awarded a 12-year, $875 million contract to Air Space Intelligence in June to develop SMART and related FMDS technology. River cities evaluate: Mississippi River mayors are developing tools to help communities evaluate data center proposals as AI and data storage demand drives rapid growth, with more than 75% of member cities already approached about hosting AI infrastructure. The resources include a "Wishlist" to assess risks and benefits and a fiscal framework examining public costs, resource use and community benefits. With multiple data centers planned in Louisiana and across the South, leaders are urging communities to carefully consider impacts on water, utilities and finances. Louisiana Illuminator has the full story. New residential community: Baton Rouge-based Level Homes has acquired 67 homesites in phase one of Gray's Landing, a new residential community in Maurice, south of Lafayette. The development marks Level Homes' seventh community in Lafayette Parish and its first as the sole builder, with 22 home designs ranging from 1,500 to 3,200 square feet. Homes will be priced from the $260s to the $450s, with homesites available now and permitting underway. AI-powered tool: The FAA is preparing to launch an AI-powered air traffic control tool in the Washington, D.C., area as soon as Monday to help reduce delays and cancellations and manage disruptions. The Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories, or Smart, system will analyze schedules, weather, runway capacity and other constraints to predict traffic flows and conflicts. Air Space Intelligence is developing Smart under an $875 million, 12-year government contract, with a nationwide rollout planned. The Wall Street Journal has the full story.
