Requirements
  • One year of post-secondary education and one year of related materials processing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • If hired on or after January 1, 2014, pass a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians.
  • Within eighteen months of hire, hold and maintain a nationally accredited central service technician credential, such as a certified registered central service technician credential, certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential, or substantially equivalent credential.
  • Obtain twelve continuing education unit credits annually for employees hired on or after January 1, 2014, or ten continuing education unit credits annually for employees hired on or before December 31, 2013.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts for operating rooms, ambulatory care facilities, hospital units, and research clinics.
  • Operate steam sterilizers, monitor time, pressure, and temperature gauges, load and unload sterilizers, and place items on shelves for distribution.
  • Prepare and dispense sterile items, inspect and stock supplies, and complete count and supply sheets documenting tray contents.
  • Select packaging and sterilization methods, examine surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function, and assemble instrument sets according to ESI software program protocols.
  • Perform simple sterilizer maintenance, including cleaning drain baskets, and prepare cultures, review processed test packs, interpret results, and complete required documentation to verify sterility.
  • Check and adjust medical equipment according to established procedures, and send equipment that does not meet specifications to the appropriate repair area.
  • Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment, prevent cross-contamination, set up decontamination equipment, clean and disinfect equipment and work areas, and handle infectious waste and linen according to established protocols.
  • Receive and store supplies from outside vendors and hospital areas, verify stock against requisitions, document received stock, report discrepancies, and assist in maintaining inventory par levels.
  • Document and fill orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and deliver supplies when warranted.
  • Maintain records of equipment inventory use, servicing frequency, and equipment referred for repair.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on sterile supply levels, sterility dates, and procedure-cart accuracy, and maintain biological and sterilizer-load documentation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification as a Registered Central Sterile Processing Distribution Technician is preferred.
  • Computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology are preferred.
