Requirements
  • Three years of clerical or office experience is required; education, training, or an associate degree may substitute for up to two years of experience.
  • Completion of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts’ Court Specialist certification program within six months of employment is required.
  • Knowledge and skill in using personal computers and word-processing, spreadsheet, or database applications.
  • Ability to verify that electronic recording and transcription equipment is operational and perform routine simple maintenance when applicable.
  • Working knowledge of office procedures, composition, records management, and office communications.
  • Ability to organize work effectively and meet required deadlines and schedules.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to review documents for proper form, content, and compliance with policies.
  • Ability to accurately transcribe from electronic recordings and stenographic notes when applicable.
  • Ability to interact with employees and the public in a pleasant, courteous, and helpful manner.
  • Ability to respond flexibly and productively to change.
  • Ability to retrieve files and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to use telephones and process written documents in a normal office environment.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background check and all required screening criteria.
  • Medical or recreational marijuana use is prohibited because this is a drug-free workplace.
Responsibilities
  • Operate Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts-approved electronic recording and transcription equipment.
  • Perform clerical duties for the judiciary or administrative supervisor as necessary.
  • Keep a monthly report of all transcripts on order and file the original report as directed by the Chief Judge.
  • Prepare all transcripts in a timely manner.
  • Monitor court proceedings with approved audio and/or video electronic recording systems and maintain a log of all cases and event times.
  • Operate a personal computer, including word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Follow courtroom etiquette requirements, including confidentiality, impartiality toward parties, and appropriate demeanor and dress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
