About the company

Rio Tinto is a global mining and metals company that extracts and processes minerals to supply the world with key materials. Its offerings include iron ore used to make steel, low-carbon aluminium for electric cars and smartphones, copper for wind turbines, electric vehicles, and water pipes, borates for crop growth, and titanium for paints. The company operates by mining ore and then refining and transforming it into usable metals and minerals for various industries. Compared with its competitors, Rio Tinto emphasizes a broad portfolio across multiple minerals and metals and highlights efforts to reduce carbon in its aluminium products, aiming to lower the environmental impact of its supply chain. The overall goal is to provide the materials the world needs while advancing lower-carbon production to support sustainable energy, transport, and infrastructure.

Rio Tinto chair: Geopolitical risk must move beyond the 'after-dinner speaker

Dominic Barton, strategic counsellor to Eurasia Group and chair of Rio Tinto, says companies must integrate geopolitical risk into core business operations rather than treating it as a side concern. Speaking after US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods, Barton noted the breakdown of assumptions about international institutions and free trade. Barton, a former McKinsey leader and Canadian ambassador to China, argues CEOs need to spend more time understanding foreign governments. He says geopolitics should inform decisions about balance sheets, debt levels, supply chain security, and data management. Rio Tinto has adjusted its approach to China, significantly increasing purchases of Chinese equipment. "It's more expensive than some of the traditional Western suppliers. But it's better," Barton said.

Sandvik partners with Rio Tinto to integrate autonomous drilling systems across Australian mines

Sandvik has partnered with Rio Tinto to integrate its i-series surface drill rigs with Rio Tinto's Autonomous Drilling System. The collaboration will combine Sandvik's AutoMine automation technology with Rio Tinto's remote operations expertise to improve safety, productivity and system interoperability in open-pit mining. Development will be managed through Rio Tinto's Perth Operations Centre, beginning with testing at Sandvik's facility in Finland. Field trials will follow at Rio Tinto's Western Australian operations to evaluate performance against production targets. The project leverages existing autonomous infrastructure at Rio Tinto's iron ore sites and aligns with both companies' expansion plans, including Sandvik's recent copper mine equipment orders and Rio Tinto's $1.5 billion Quebec smelter expansion, due to complete by end-2026.
