Israeli medtech company FIZE Medical has raised $20 million in a Series B round co-led by Asahi Kasei Medical and Rapha Capital Management. The funding will advance development of FIZE Optima, an AI-driven platform designed to predict fluid-related risks in intensive care patients. FIZE has developed the FIZE kUO system, which monitors kidney function and manages fluid balance in critically ill patients through real-time digital urine output monitoring. The company is expanding its strategic partnership with Asahi Kasei Medical, which will now distribute FIZE's products in both Japan and Europe. Approximately 50% of intensive care patients develop acute kidney injury during hospitalisation, with a mortality rate exceeding 20%. FIZE's technology aims to enable early detection and intervention. The company, which began operations in 2019, employs 40 people.

Asahi Kasei Bioprocess has launched the VANTIJ® SU-VFC Benchtop, a small-format automated system for virus filtration in gene therapy manufacturing. The system was unveiled at Bioprocess International East 2026 in Boston. The benchtop platform is the first in Asahi Kasei's VANTIJ® family designed for laboratory-scale and process development applications. It features tool-free installation, guided setup, and recipe-driven software to streamline workflows using Planova™ virus-removal filters. The system addresses operational challenges in gene therapy production, including long timelines, regulatory requirements, and operator training needs. It offers batch reporting and supports consistent execution of filtration processes. The launch reflects Asahi Kasei's focus on supporting cell and gene therapies, a rapidly growing segment within biopharmaceuticals and a strategic priority for the company's healthcare sector.
Asahi Kasei has developed a lithium pre-doping technology for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with silicon-based anodes, addressing capacity loss issues that typically occur during initial charge-discharge cycles. The technology enables lithium carbonate to serve as an additional lithium source at lower voltages by using special electrolyte additives. Internal tests with an NMC cell containing an anode of 90% graphite and 10% SiO showed a 10% increase in energy density. The solution uses low-cost lithium carbonate and can be applied to existing battery manufacturing lines without significant modifications. The development targets growing demand from electric vehicles and humanoid robots, which require higher energy densities. Asahi Kasei will conduct proof-of-concept evaluations with customers worldwide to explore practical applications.
