About the job

Requirements
  • At least 8 years of experience building production web applications, with a track record of owning significant technical surface area.
  • Strong backend and data engineering instincts, including experience ingesting, processing, transforming, and serving data at the application layer.
  • Experience building data-intensive customer-facing applications and making complex data usable and legible to non-technical users.
  • Proficiency in Python and JavaScript, and experience designing and building RESTful APIs.
  • Full-stack capability with backend as the center of gravity.
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses and modern data tooling.
  • Experience managing an engineering team across the front end and back end, with the ability to mentor and scale the department.
  • A product engineering mindset that considers what is being built from the user's perspective.
Responsibilities
  • Own architectural decisions across the stack, from data flows out of EHR and practice management systems through backend services, business logic, and customer-facing applications.
  • Make pragmatic technical choices that balance speed with durability at an early-stage company.
  • Establish engineering standards, patterns, and practices that scale as the team grows.
  • Design and implement backend systems that transform complex healthcare data into products practices use.
  • Build application surfaces, including dashboards, workflows, and operational tools, that put data in the hands of clinic staff.
  • Model data, write performant queries, and build the user interface layer that makes data useful.
  • Work with operations and product to understand existing processes.
  • Identify patterns in manual, service-driven processes and translate them into durable software abstractions, including configurable workflows, rule-based automation, and self-serve tools that replace human-in-the-loop work.
  • Define the vision for how the technical organization is structured and scales, and own the end-to-end hiring process that builds it.
  • Provide technical leadership to a small data and engineering team through architecture guidance, code review, and mentorship.
  • Help onboard engineers as the team grows.
  • Create an environment of ownership, clarity, and high standards.
  • Write thoughtful tests for workflow logic and core systems.
  • Debug production issues and improve systems based on failure modes.
  • Ensure changes are safe, observable, and reversible, and set the bar for production readiness.
Desired Qualifications
  • Healthcare, billing, or claims data experience.
  • Experience turning internal tools or managed services into self-serve customer-facing products.
  • Experience with workflow automation or rule-based systems.

About the company

Duet helps nurse practitioner–owned practices expand primary care access by handling the business side of care. It provides a suite of back-office services, including administrative support, financial planning, and operational efficiency improvements, so clinicians can focus on patient care while the practices run smoothly and stay profitable. Revenue comes from service fees charged to the supported practices. Unlike broader healthcare consultancies, Duet targets NP-owned practices and community health outcomes, using a focused, practice-level partnership to grow access to care in underserved areas and improve overall healthcare results.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Duet says it is building the nation's largest network of NP-owned practices.
  • Payor-facing network expansion broadens negotiating leverage and utilization across multiple clinics.
  • 2026 job postings signal hiring across engineering, FP&A, and integrations, implying active buildout.

What critics are saying

  • NP reimbursement pressure remains severe; Duet itself highlights 15% losses becoming 50% losses.
  • Dependence on small independent practices concentrates churn if clinics fail or merge.
  • Seed-stage backing from Kairos HQ and Lerer Hippeau means revenue scale still unproven.

What makes Duet unique

  • Duet builds exclusive contracts around NP-led primary care, not generic clinic software.
  • It targets nurse practitioner-owned practices, a narrow underserved wedge with clear reimbursement pain.
  • Monthly NP Practice nominations and content create distribution inside the NP community.
