Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, Human Nutrition, or a comparable major is required.
  • Successful completion of a coordinated program or dietetic internship of at least 900 hours under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian is required.
  • Registered Dietitian status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.
  • A Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist license from the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition is required, with provisions for license-eligible dietitians.
  • One year of clinical experience is required for Level II and Level III, with at least five years of clinical experience or at least three years of clinical experience plus an approved nutrition-related certification.
  • The dietitian must maintain continuing professional education through the Professional Development Portfolio.
  • The dietitian must comply with performance improvement plans and applicable licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agency requirements.
  • The dietitian must meet Nutrition Services meeting and attendance standards.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate all phases of nutrition care, including nutrition assessment, care planning, monitoring, education, and counseling for hospitalized patients and outpatients in varied settings.
  • Provide nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy integrated with patients' medical goals.
  • Evaluate, interpret, monitor, and document the nutritional status and nutritional needs of inpatients and outpatients using established standards of care and practice guidelines.
  • Provide age-specific nutrition counseling that meets the cultural needs of patients and their families.
  • Develop, review, update, and implement educational materials for patients and professionals.
  • Write orders for diets, supplements, enteral and parenteral nutrition, and laboratory data in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Function as an integral member of the clinical interdisciplinary team.
  • Precept dietetic interns and provide on-the-job training for newly hired clinical staff.
  • Supervise the daily work of registered dietetic technicians and provide input into their evaluations without directly evaluating their performance.
  • For Level II, work in an assigned specialty area and integrate research and education into practice based on demonstrated competencies.
  • Serve as a liaison and advocate for the profession by sharing new practice knowledge and skills with other professional areas and disciplines.
  • For Level III, provide expertise, oversight, and leadership in a designated specialty area as needed, such as student advising, malnutrition specialization, nutrition support, program coordination, clinical quality, information technology, outpatient clinical coordination, lead work, or subject-matter expertise.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of outpatient nutrition experience is strongly preferred.
  • One year of experience in an acute care environment is preferred for Level I.
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist certification is preferred.
