Requirements
  • Ability to drive all truck and trailer combinations offered in the truck driving program.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate quality training.
  • Ability to work effectively with students in both one-on-one and group instruction situations.
  • Basic knowledge of and skills with technology, including Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Three years of experience operating large trucks and 48-foot or 53-foot trailers.
  • A current and valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
  • A negative Department of Transportation drug test and an acceptable driving record are required for employment and continued employment.
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate and supervise student driving in varied environments and driving conditions, including straight-line backing, developing depth perception, making turns, backing into docks and parking places, mirror adjustment, and use of large and convex mirrors.
  • Perform work duties outside in all weather conditions.
  • Provide training for students in the truck driving program and other students seeking a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Administer Commercial Driver’s License examinations.
  • Conduct driving simulations and brake-board activities.
  • Purchase supplies.
  • Perform light maintenance on, and wash and clean, vehicles.
  • Paint and maintain lines on driver training areas.
  • Demonstrate shifting techniques, coupling and uncoupling semi-trailer combinations, vehicle inspection, and scaling.
  • Provide collision-avoidance training.
  • Assist with program recruitment efforts.
  • Participate in assessing student learning.
  • Maintain flexibility in training delivery.
  • Maintain service-excellence standards.
  • Work in a team environment without direct supervision and support a cohesive departmental atmosphere by attending team meetings and reaching consensus.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with students, instructors, truck supply and maintenance personnel, trucking company personnel, and Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles representatives.
Desired Qualifications
  • Seven years of experience operating large trucks and 48-foot or 53-foot trailers.
  • Completion of formal truck-driving training.
  • Training and teaching experience in the trucking industry.
  • Experience with vans, flatbeds, tankers, and double trailers.
  • Certified examiner experience or certification.
