Here's where millions of free eggs are headed in Texas following settlement.

Here's where millions of free eggs are headed in Texas following settlement. Posted: Sep 8, 2026 / 12:23 PM CDT Updated: Sep 8, 2026 / 12:23 PM CDT Over 1.5 million eggs to be sent to Houston Food Bank AUSTIN, Texas (KETK) - More than 7 million free eggs will soon be distributed to food banks across Texas following a settlement between the state and three major egg producers, the Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday. "After securing 7 million eggs for the people of Texas, I am excited to announce that Texans will now have an opportunity to receive cartons of free eggs in communities across the state," Attorney General Ken Paxton said. In June, a settlement was reached with Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova and Hickman's Egg Ranch following antitrust claims made by the Trump Administration's Department of Justice. These claims alleged that the companies conspired to inflate egg prices between 2022 and 2025. The Attorney General's office said an investigation then found that the companies coordinated their bids to manipulate daily egg price quotes. Over 1.5 million eggs will be distributed to the Houston Food Bank following the settlement. "In one instance, a Hickman's executive urged executives at Cal-Maine and Versova to submit aggressive, repeated bids to push prices higher," the attorney general's office said. "All three companies then placed numerous, elevated bids, prompting Urner Barry to raise its price quotes. By manipulating this industry benchmark, the companies artificially inflated the cost of eggs paid by Texas consumers." As part of the settlement, the companies agreed to donate 7 million eggs to Texas food banks and will have to pay $3.3 million to participating states. The following food banks are expected to receive free eggs as part of the settlement: * North Texas Food Bank in Plano will receive 842,400 eggs * Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth will receive 842,400 eggs * Food Bank of West Central Texas in Abilene will receive 140,400 eggs * Wichita Falls Area Food Bank in Wichita Falls will receive 140,400 eggs * East Texas Food Bank in Tyler will receive 280,800 eggs * Central Texas Food Bank in Austin will receive 561,600 eggs * San Antonio Food Bank in San Antonio will receive 464,600 eggs * Houston Food Bank in Houston will receive 1,544,400 eggs * Coastal Bend Food Bank in Corpus Christi will receive 280,800 eggs * El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank in El Paso will receive 280,800 eggs * Food Bank of the Golden Crescent in Victoria will receive 140,400 eggs * High Plains Food Bank in Amarillo will receive 140,400 eggs * South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock will receive 140,400 eggs * West Texas Food Bank in Odessa will receive 280,800 eggs * Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley in Pharr will receive 561,600 eggs * South Texas Food Bank in Laredo will receive 280,800 eggs * Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont will receive 140,400 eggs "I will continue to help our families put food on the table and do everything within my power to lower prices and help Texans who are struggling to make ends meet," Paxton said.

Minnesota to get 2 million eggs from settlement a law professor calls 'an award for violating the law'

Minnesota to get 2 million eggs from settlement a law professor calls 'an award for violating the law' The complaint alleges nearly three years of coordinated bidding to manipulate the Urner Barry price benchmark. | Published on: Aug 20, 2026 A law professor who follows antitrust enforcement in agriculture said the deal is too weak to discourage future collusion. "It's absolutely not a real penalty, and it's not even the cost of doing business," said Delcianna Winders, director of the Animal Law and Policy Institute at Vermont Law and Graduate School. "It is effectively an award for violating the law and ripping off consumers because for every $1,000 they made in profit, they gave the states just a single dollar." The Justice Department's Antitrust Division and 17 state attorneys general, including Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, filed a civil complaint June 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa against Cal-Maine Foods Inc., Hickman's Egg Ranch Inc. and Versova. The settlements were announced June 30. The complaint alleges the companies coordinated bidding on egg spot markets from around June 2022 to March 2025 to inflate daily price quotations published by Urner Barry, a benchmark pricing service used in egg supply contracts. Hickman's CEO emailed Versova and Cal-Maine executives in December 2022 urging them to submit "strong bids, early and often" to push prices higher, Ellison's office said. Under the settlements, which required federal court approval, the companies agreed to pay $3.3 million to the states, deliver 53 million eggs to food banks and nonprofits at their own expense, and adopt antitrust compliance programs. Around 2 million of those eggs are designated for Minnesota, Ellison's office said. The state has not received eggs yet, but Hickman's has 18 months and Versova 36 months to deliver. The attorney general's office is working with food banks on logistics, spokesman Brian Evans said Tuesday, Aug. 18. "Corporations should be competing against one another for your business, not colluding with one another to keep prices high," Ellison said in July, pointing to his office's May settlement with Agri Stats, a data firm barred from sharing sensitive pricing information among competing meat processors. Cal-Maine denied all wrongdoing in a June 29 statement, calling the claims baseless and saying communications cited in the complaint were made primarily by a single former employee and did not affect egg prices in any market. The company said it was not assessed any fines or penalties and agreed to donate 30 million eggs and pay $1.5 million. Versova and Mantiqueira USA, which acquired Hickman's in November, did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication. Winders said the settlement carries a cost for farmers because the case ends without a verdict. "If you had had a verdict, that then could have been used in separate lawsuits by producers, by consumers, to seek relief for their losses," she said. "Unfortunately, I suspect it likely is a preview," she said. "I hope I'm wrong."

Attorney General James announces delivery of over 280,000 eggs to New York City families.

Attorney General James announces delivery of over 280,000 eggs to New York City families. New York Attorney General Letitia James announced on Aug. 14 the delivery of more than 280,000 eggs to Food Bank For New York City in the Bronx as part of a bipartisan multistate settlement with Cal-Maine Foods, Versova/Centrum, and Hickman's Egg Ranch for alleged price fixing. The settlement follows an investigation led by the Office of the Attorney General in coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice and attorneys general from 16 other states, which found that these egg producers coordinated to influence a daily price index for eggs and artificially increased prices for retailers and consumers nationwide. Under the terms of the settlement, Cal-Maine Foods, Versova/Centrum, and Hickman's Egg Ranch will deliver a total of 53 million eggs to food banks across 17 participating states. Of these, New York will receive nearly five million eggs distributed through Feeding New York's statewide network. The companies will also pay $3.3 million to participating states and adopt compliance measures designed to prevent future violations. The recent delivery included 23,400 cartons - over one million eggs - to Food Bank For New York City as part of ongoing distributions statewide through October. "New York City families deserve fair prices for essentials at the grocery store," said Attorney General James. "For years, corporate greed inflated the price of eggs as companies worked together to push prices and their profits even higher. After putting a stop to this, my office has secured millions of free eggs for New Yorkers, and more than one million eggs have already been delivered to food banks across the state. I thank Food Bank for New York City for their partnership to ensure New Yorkers in need receive these eggs." Elizabeth Romano, Senior Director of Operations at Food Bank For New York City, said: "We are grateful to the Attorney General for helping make this delivery possible. Eggs are an important source of protein and we're pleased to help provide this nutritious food to families facing food insecurity across the five boroughs." The investigation determined that since at least early 2022, Cal-Maine Foods, Versova/Centrum, and Hickman's Egg Ranch coordinated bidding strategies intended to manipulate Urner Barry's daily egg price quotes - a benchmark widely used in supply contracts - by submitting sham bids at inflated prices then withdrawing them after raising market rates. The Office of the Attorney General is responsible for promoting social justice through civil rights enforcement and consumer advocacy; protecting public safety; defending civil rights; upholding consumer protections; preserving environmental standards; operating regional offices throughout New York State; providing services such as fraud investigations and tenant dispute mediation; all under leadership currently held by Letitia James, according to the official website.
