Requirements
  • Willingness to relocate to Palm Springs, California, or the surrounding area is required.
  • An M.S. or PhD in Medical Physics or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of 3+ years of clinical experience in addition to a CAMPEP-accredited residency is required.
  • Certification in Radiation Oncology Physics by the American Board of Radiology or another alternative certifying body is required.
  • Candidates who are not certified must be eligible for board certification and achieve this status within 3 years of hire.
  • Candidates must apply for and maintain relevant state licensing and/or registration required to work as a medical physicist at the clinical site in a timely manner.
Responsibilities
  • Work at the clinic site in collaboration with Cancer Care Leadership to ensure high-quality and safe interpretation, delivery, operation, and monitoring of radiation safety policies, procedures, standards, and equipment for Radiation Oncology Services.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality radiation therapy while providing staff with proper education and training and oversight to minimize radiation exposure.
  • Implement and abide by customer service standards.
  • Support and implement patient safety and other appropriate safety practices.
  • Support and demonstrate Family-Centered Care principles when interacting with patients, their families, and co-workers.
  • Calibrate dose meters, including dosimetric inter-comparisons for quality assurance, and radiation equipment, including accelerator monitor unit calibration.
  • Acquire beam data for treatment planning.
  • Prepare data for treatment planning systems.
  • Develop and improve dose measurement systems, protocols, and software for dosimetry purposes, including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations for radiation safety.
  • Participate in developing organizational Performance Improvement activities, policies and procedures, and standards of practice to meet required regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with acceptance testing and commissioning of new machines and acceptance testing and recommissioning after major maintenance.
  • Perform individual treatment planning, dosimetry calculations, and treatment planning reviews for the physics component.
  • Provide physics consultation to radiation oncology personnel and radiation oncologists concerning patient care and treatment.
  • Ensure routine verification of the department treatment planning system.
  • Collaborate with the information services department and provide software management of the department planning system.
  • Assist in planning and shielding calculations for new radiation facilities and programs.
  • Interpret and prepare documentation summaries of regulatory changes for integration into departmental operations.
  • Provide dosimetry checks following source changes.
  • Assist with selecting and acquiring sources for permanent implant techniques.
  • Participate with the department director and Physics director in clinical education, training, and competency evaluations for medical physics, dosimetry, and therapy staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Candidates who have passed the Part-I and possibly Part-II American Board of Radiology examinations are preferred.
  • Experience with High Dose Rate and Stereotactic Radiosurgery programs is preferred.
  • Computer system administration experience with patient record and verify database applications is desirable.

Siemens Healthineers has received up to $60 million from the US Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health to develop photon Flash radiotherapy, with the company contributing an additional $23 million, totalling $83 million over five years. Flash photon therapy delivers radiotherapy more than 100 times faster than current technologies, aiming to reduce side effects and improve healthy tissue sparing. Unlike proton and electron beam platforms, which face scalability challenges, photon beams are the standard of care for over 50% of cancer patients. The project will build on existing C-arm linear accelerators to enable broader clinical access. Siemens Healthineers aims to transition ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy from experimental treatment into global standard of care within the five-year timeframe.

Varian TrueBeam gets FDA clearance for low-dose radiotherapy to treat osteoarthritis

Siemens Healthineers has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy systems to treat medically refractory osteoarthritis in adults using low-dose radiation therapy. This marks the first expansion of Varian's radiotherapy platform beyond cancer care into chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Osteoarthritis affects over 33 million adults in the US and approximately 600 million globally. The clearance covers TrueBeam, TrueBeam STx, VitalBeam and Edge systems, offering patients with persistent pain a non-invasive outpatient treatment option that targets inflammation, reduces pain and improves joint function. The approval builds on Varian's previous regulatory clearances for non-oncological indications, including radiosurgery treatment for medically refractory essential tremor. The TrueBeam platform combines high-resolution imaging with precise dose control whilst maintaining streamlined clinical workflows.

Telix and Varian enter research collaboration. Telix Pharmaceuticals and Siemens Healthineers' company Varian have agreed to develop novel clinical applications that combine Telix's theranostics products and Varian's external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) technology. The first area of focus will be in identifying opportunities to use Telix's prostate cancer PET imaging agents in selecting patients for EBRT, developing personalized treatment plans (particularly in the context of Varian's Ethos adaptive radiotherapy system), and monitoring responses to treatment, Telix said. The agreement supports both company-sponsored and investigator-led clinical studies.
