Overlook Medical Center begins $70 million surgical department expansion in Summit. Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in Summit began construction on an expanded surgical department, the John E. Reeves Center for Advanced Surgery, following a wall-breaking ceremony, according to an Aug. 21 announcement. "This is the time to expand our surgical environment and prepare Atlantic Health Overlook for the next era of exceptional care," said Stephanie Schwartz, president of Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center and senior vice president of Atlantic Health. The $70 million project aims to address both current needs and anticipated growth. Surgical volume at the facility increased 22% from 2021 to 2025, while robotic surgery cases grew by 132% from 2022 to 2025. The hospital expects annual surgical volumes will rise from more than 18,000 in 2025 to over 24,000 within ten years. Hospital officials said this marks the first major upgrade to its surgical services area in over four decades. Planning for the expansion included meetings between surgeons, engineers and architects in 2023. During these sessions, staff used cardboard models inside Bouras Auditorium to design optimal layouts for walls, fixtures and desks. Muhammad Feteiha, MD, chairman of the department of surgery at Overlook Medical Center, said, "This was truly a team effort, and at the heart of it we believe in Atlantic Health Overlook's future." Jillian Carratala, RN, director of nursing for surgical services at Overlook Medical Center, added, "We listened to what the patients told us. That patient perspective became our foundation. It guided every conversation, every decision, and every revision along the way." Construction is planned in phases over three to four years so that surgeries can continue without interruption during renovations. Funding comes largely from donors through Overlook Foundation; significant support was provided by Reeves Foundation. "We are proud to support this plan which has kept patients at the center of every decision. The Overlook team has truly designed a surgical center for the future," said Ed Reeves.
