Atlantic Health hosts inaugural symposium on advances in neurological emergency and critical care. 69 3 minutes read MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) - Neuroscience experts from across the region gathered in Morristown earlier this month for Atlantic Health's inaugural Neurological and Neurosurgical Emergency and Critical Care Symposium, highlighting advances in treating life-threatening brain injuries and neurological emergencies. The event, held Oct. 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Morristown, brought together specialists in neurocritical care, medical technology developers and health care professionals for a continuing medical education conference focused on improving outcomes for patients experiencing severe neurological conditions. The one-and-a-half-day symposium featured lectures, interactive workshops, clinical presentations and discussions about treating patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical emergencies. The conference was developed by Dr. Kiwon Lee, chair of neurology at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center and director of stroke and neurocritical care programs at Atlantic Health, to promote education, collaboration and advances in neurological emergency care. "Neurological and neurosurgical emergencies are life-threatening, time-sensitive illnesses that require clinicians to think and act quickly and use some of the most specialized, complex and advanced techniques and technology available," said Dr. Lee. "This event was designed to bring together the foremost experts in this field to discuss, collaborate and celebrate these advances and the lives we save beyond expectation." Presentations covered advances in neurovascular care, including updates from clinical trials, as well as specialized lectures by national leaders in neurosurgery, stroke treatment and neurocritical care. The symposium also included training on using critical care ultrasound to guide medical decisions, a hands-on workshop involving brain oxygen monitoring catheter placement, and refresher courses on neurological emergencies and critical care procedures. Lee moderated a panel discussion and debate on clinical cases and emerging issues in the field. Beyond the medical presentations, the conference featured personal stories from two families whose lives were affected by neurological emergencies. Kevin and Jen Morra shared the recovery journey of their son, Jack Morra, who experienced sudden stroke-like symptoms in March 2025 at age 18. Jack was initially taken to Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center before being transferred to Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in Summit, where doctors diagnosed a massive brain hemorrhage caused by an arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, an abnormal connection between blood vessels. He spent more than three weeks in the neurological intensive care unit, requiring lifesaving treatment for severe brain swelling and injury. Following his hospitalization, Jack underwent inpatient rehabilitation, gradually regaining abilities such as sitting upright, standing and speaking. His recovery also included additional medical procedures, including a cranioplasty and the placement of a shunt. According to Atlantic Health, Jack has since made significant progress, regaining aspects of his personality, sense of humor and independence. He has begun taking community college courses, learning to drive with adaptive modifications and exploring career opportunities inspired by the therapists who assisted in his recovery. Standing alongside his parents at the symposium, Jack thanked the medical professionals who helped save his life. "I don't really remember any of it, but I'm here because of all of you," Morra said. "I want to thank all of you." The event also featured Brian Friedman, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the New York Jets, who spoke about the importance of neurological research and early detection of brain aneurysms. Friedman is president and co-founder of the Matthew Friedman Memorial Foundation, established in memory of his son, Matthew, who died after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm while attending college as a pre-medical student. "If this could happen to Matthew, it could happen to anyone. The diagnosis gave our loss a name. It also gave our family a responsibility," Friedman told the audience. "No parent should ever get that phone call." Friedman discussed ongoing challenges in detecting and treating brain aneurysms, including limited awareness of warning signs, gaps in emergency responder training and insufficient research funding. According to information presented at the symposium, approximately one in 50 people has an unruptured brain aneurysm, many of which are discovered incidentally during medical imaging performed for other reasons. Friedman urged medical professionals to continue working toward earlier detection, improved education and greater awareness of the condition. "With your expertise and partnership, we can help more people recognize the warning signs, find aneurysms earlier and avoid the phone call that changed our lives forever," Friedman told the audience. Atlantic Health said the symposium was designed to encourage collaboration among medical professionals while highlighting emerging technologies and treatments that can improve survival and recovery for patients experiencing neurological emergencies. Atlantic Health is accredited by the Medical Society of New Jersey to provide continuing medical education credits for physicians.
Morristown Medical Center to benefit from record $5M cancer research gift. Two longtime Morris County residents are donating $5 million to Atlantic Health to support cancer research, clinical trials, and more. Posted Thu, Oct 15, 2026 at 11:10 am ET MORRISTOWN, NJ - A record-breaking $5 million donation to Atlantic Health will help advance cancer research and clinical trials across the health system, including efforts connected to Morristown Medical Center. The gift, announced Wednesday, is the largest research-focused donation in Atlantic Health's history and will establish a permanent endowment supporting the development of new cancer treatments and improvements in patient care. The donation comes from Bruce I. Jacobs and Kenneth N. Levy, co-founders of Florham Park-based Jacobs Levy Equity Management, in honor of the firm's 40th anniversary. State Says GEICO To Refund More Than $10.5M To New Jersey Policyholders Alexis Tarrazi The newly established Jacobs Levy Clinical Research and Innovation Endowment will provide annual funding to Atlantic Health's Clinical Research and Innovation Institute, which oversees clinical research across the health system. According to Atlantic Health, the money will be directed toward promising oncology research proposals, including studies evaluating new cancer therapies, technologies and approaches to patient care. The endowment will also support efforts to expand access to clinical trials and help early-stage research projects grow into larger initiatives. "Our firm has long believed in the power of philanthropy to drive healthcare advances so it is immensely gratifying to know that this new endowment, as we commemorate four decades of pioneering investment research, will have a transformational impact on cancer care in New Jersey," Jacobs said. The donation builds on a longstanding relationship between the businessmen, Atlantic Health and the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center. Over the past 25 years, Jacobs Levy Equity Management has contributed more than $1.4 million toward patient care, research and other programs throughout the health system. That includes a $1 million gift to establish the Jacobs Levy Genomic Medicine and Research Program, as well as contributions to the Chambers Center for Well-Being, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute and Goryeb Children's Hospital. "We're proud to build on the long-standing relationship between our firm and Atlantic Health and the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center to support the deeply devoted clinicians, researchers and change agents at Atlantic Health," Levy said. Atlantic Health is currently conducting nearly 180 clinical trials, including early-stage studies focused on cancers of the brain, breast, gastrointestinal tract, ovaries and pancreas, along with melanoma, multiple myeloma and other forms of cancer. The new endowment is intended to provide a lasting source of funding for research, rather than a one-time investment. "Thanks to the tireless spirit of giving and foresight of Bruce Jacobs and Ken Levy, this major endowment will provide Atlantic Health clinicians with the resources to pursue novel approaches to medicine and advance cancer care for communities well into the future," said Saad Ehtisham, president and CEO of Atlantic Health. Both Jacobs and Levy grew up in New Jersey and have lived with their families in Morris County for more than 30 years. Overlook Medical Center begins $70 million surgical department expansion in Summit. Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in Summit began construction on an expanded surgical department, the John E. Reeves Center for Advanced Surgery, following a wall-breaking ceremony, according to an Aug. 21 announcement. "This is the time to expand our surgical environment and prepare Atlantic Health Overlook for the next era of exceptional care," said Stephanie Schwartz, president of Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center and senior vice president of Atlantic Health. The $70 million project aims to address both current needs and anticipated growth. Surgical volume at the facility increased 22% from 2021 to 2025, while robotic surgery cases grew by 132% from 2022 to 2025. The hospital expects annual surgical volumes will rise from more than 18,000 in 2025 to over 24,000 within ten years. Hospital officials said this marks the first major upgrade to its surgical services area in over four decades. Planning for the expansion included meetings between surgeons, engineers and architects in 2023. During these sessions, staff used cardboard models inside Bouras Auditorium to design optimal layouts for walls, fixtures and desks. Muhammad Feteiha, MD, chairman of the department of surgery at Overlook Medical Center, said, "This was truly a team effort, and at the heart of it we believe in Atlantic Health Overlook's future." Jillian Carratala, RN, director of nursing for surgical services at Overlook Medical Center, added, "We listened to what the patients told us. That patient perspective became our foundation. It guided every conversation, every decision, and every revision along the way." Construction is planned in phases over three to four years so that surgeries can continue without interruption during renovations. Funding comes largely from donors through Overlook Foundation; significant support was provided by Reeves Foundation. "We are proud to support this plan which has kept patients at the center of every decision. The Overlook team has truly designed a surgical center for the future," said Ed Reeves.
