Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • Seven to ten years of experience analyzing launch vehicles, rocket engines, or other transferable systems.
  • Solid structural mechanics fundamentals, including static strength, stability, fatigue, and fracture.
  • Experience with common commercial finite element analysis solvers such as ANSYS or NASTRAN.
  • Experience with basic scripting or automation tools for analysis workflow improvement, such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience interpreting and verifying against structural requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute ideas and implement team decisions collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor other engineers.
  • U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, protected-individual status, or eligibility to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations for access to ITAR-controlled technology.
  • Ability to prove identity and authorization to work in the United States and complete employment eligibility verification.
Responsibilities
  • Own the structural integrity of a module or subsystem of the Nova launch vehicle.
  • Lead and coordinate structural analysis efforts across multiple engineers.
  • Mentor and support a team of reliability engineers in structural integrity.
  • Translate system-level structural requirements to component designers.
  • Drive consistent structural analysis and test processes across the assigned module or subsystem.
  • Develop methods and tools to support the module team.
  • Drive gaps in material and loads databases to closure to support the module team.
  • Develop analysis models to substantiate parts and/or decompose loads to other team members.
  • Provide technical review and approval authority for the stress work of others.
  • Develop loads and load cases, communicate them to stakeholders, and implement them in analysis as needed.
  • Identify required structural testing, develop test plans, and participate in validation testing.
  • Identify and communicate risks to leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in a related technical field.
  • Experience developing structural test plans and conducting material characterization testing.
  • Experience with common launch-vehicle structural design standards, including NASA STD 5012 and AIAA-S-080.
  • Experience with both vehicle primary structure and engine components.
  • Experience with ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with industry approaches and tools for damage tolerance, including NASA STD 5019 and NASGRO.

Former OpenAI executive Kevin Weil joins Stoke Space board as reusable rocket firm eyes commercial operations

Stoke Space has appointed Kevin Weil to its board of directors. Weil brings over 20 years of technology leadership experience from roles at OpenAI, Planet Labs, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Most recently, he served as vice president of science at OpenAI, focusing on applying AI to scientific discovery. Stoke Space is developing Nova, a fully reusable medium-lift launch vehicle. The company aims to provide low-cost, on-demand space transport with aircraft-like frequency. Weil was part of management teams that took Twitter and Planet public and helped scale Instagram and ChatGPT into global platforms. Stoke's technology development has been funded by the US Space Force, DIU, NASA, and the National Science Foundation. Weil holds degrees in physics and mathematics from Harvard and Stanford.

Stoke Space raises $860M in extended Series D to accelerate Nova rocket development

Stoke Space Technologies has extended its Series D funding round to $860 million, up from the $510 million initially announced in October 2025. The rocket company is developing fully and rapidly reusable medium-lift launch vehicles. The original funding was earmarked for completing Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and expanding production capacity for its Nova launch vehicle. The additional capital will accelerate future elements of the company's product roadmap. Founded by CEO Andy Lapsa, Stoke has now raised $1.34 billion in total funding. The company is backed by the US Space Force, Defence Innovation Unit, NASA and the National Science Foundation, amongst other government and private partners. Terms of the funding extension were not disclosed.
