About the Job

Requirements

  • Substantial experience building and running production software, including time at a senior, staff, or principal level of responsibility.
  • Five or six years of professional experience.
  • A track record of owning work end to end, from design through shipped and operated production code.
  • Real depth in more than one layer of the stack, including backend services and their failure modes, data modelling and persistence, web or mobile client architecture, cloud infrastructure, and delivery pipelines; strength in several areas and working fluency in the rest.
  • Comfort with event-driven or event-sourced designs, explicit domain modelling, and codebases where architecture is enforced rather than assumed.
  • Experience with versioned contracts between parties who ship on their own schedule, including public application programming interfaces, software development kits, plugin platforms, or extension platforms.
  • Familiarity with distributed data tradeoffs, including replication, consistency levels, event ordering and versioning, and failure reasoning in multi-region systems.
  • Experience with large, long-lived systems containing legacy that cannot simply be removed, including incremental migration, coexistence, and deprecation with real customers attached.
  • Strong technical writing, including design documents, architecture decision records, and request-for-comment documents that other engineers can build from without a meeting.
  • Practical fluency with artificial-intelligence-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cowork, and Copilot, including the harnesses and evaluation loops that make them dependable.
  • Ability to work effectively across time zones in a primarily distributed organization.

Responsibilities

  • Help teams make and document architectural decisions in their domains by pairing on designs, testing tradeoffs, and improving architecture decision records.
  • Contribute to the weekly architecture advisory forum by strengthening proposals and discussions rather than handing down decisions.
  • Keep architecture decision records connected across repositories so relevant prior decisions surface when teams need them.
  • Identify cross-cutting concerns such as contract and versioning conventions, identity and permissions, tenancy and data isolation, observability, and migration sequencing.
  • Bring options and evidence to contentious decisions, run technical spikes when needed, and document the findings.
  • Raise the standard of design reviews through better questions, clearer writing, and less ceremony.
  • Embed with a team or project for a period, carrying real engineering work and improving the codebase and team.
  • Build reference implementations for new architectural patterns and support their adoption by smoothing implementation issues.
  • Perform difficult diagnostic work involving performance, data integrity, cross-service failures, and issues spanning multiple teams.
  • Prototype and research technical directions before roadmap commitment, and document the results.
  • Partner with engineering leaders, product, and senior engineers on sequencing dependencies and priorities.
  • Work with delivery teams, customers, and integration partners on deployment architecture, security, integration design, and performance.
  • Ensure customer-environment constraints involving scale, store hardware, data handling, regional variation, and regulatory variation reach the teams designing solutions.
  • Help engineers develop as architectural thinkers by improving the quality of technical decisions around them.
  • Write production code, review designs, pair with teams, and work across backend services, event pipelines, customer security reviews, and integrations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Retail, point-of-sale, or omnichannel commerce experience involving stores, inventory, fulfilment, and software running on physical store hardware.
  • Telecom retail experience involving activations, carrier integrations, and device and plan catalog complexity.
  • Experience building or running an extension, plugin, or partner platform where third parties ship against a contract.
  • Payments experience involving PCI scope, tokenization, terminal integrations, or SOC 2.
  • Multi-tenant software-as-a-service experience at scale, including tenancy models, isolation, and per-customer configuration without per-customer forks.
  • Experience taking a major product through end-of-life or replatforming while customers migrate.
