About the company

Bank of America runs one of the largest US banks, serving consumers, small businesses, wealthy families, corporations and institutional investors. Alongside checking accounts, credit cards, mortgages and business loans, it owns the Merrill brokerage, a private bank for wealthy clients and a global investment bank that advises on deals and trades stocks and bonds. Customers reach it through thousands of branches and ATMs and its mobile banking app. It earns money mainly from the gap between what it charges on loans and pays on deposits, plus fees from advice, asset management, deal work and trading. It grew from a San Francisco bank founded in 1904 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

  • Cheap funding cushions profits: $530 billion of its $2.03 trillion in deposits paid no interest at June 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Falling rates pinch lending profit: lower rates partly offset its 9% rise in interest income in the June 2026 quarter.

Bank of America hires 1,000 contractors to patch software flaws exposed by Anthropic's Mythos

Bank of America has hired 1,000 contractors to help patch software flaws exposed by advanced AI models, including Anthropic's Mythos, chief executive officer Brian Moynihan told CNBC on Wednesday. The contractors work alongside 3,000 internal staff and have been in place since the second quarter. The bank spent a "couple hundred million plus" in the third quarter on software fixes and anti-money laundering compliance. Moynihan expects remediation costs to fall over time. "Once you patch, you don't have to patch as much," he said. Shares slumped as much as 8% on Wednesday. AI is also cutting costs. Savings from the bank's 130 internal AI projects are expected to rise from $300 million this year to $700 million in 2027.

Chief executive officer Brian Moynihan and Faiz Ahmad, co-head of global investment banking, tried to keep her. A source said BofA could not match JPMorgan's pay package. Co-head of global investment banking Mike Joo and tech banker Ed Liu left in early August. Tech dealmaker Kevin Brunner and M&A co-head David Fishman are also joining JPMorgan. The business remains strong. Second-quarter investment banking fees rose 50% to more than $2.1 billion, and total revenue rose 15% to $31.6 billion.
