Requirements
  • Serve as a principal investigator, technical lead, or senior contributor on applied research efforts, with a record of securing and sustaining external funding in underwater acoustics, signal processing, autonomous decision-making, or software development.
  • Lead individual and multidisciplinary portfolios of research projects, including developing technical concepts, writing proposals, staffing, conducting research, managing budgets, and delivering results.
  • Lead a research organization, including planning and managing labor across projects, managing research budgets, and hiring, coaching, and mentoring employees.
  • Coordinate across units to maintain rigorous execution, sound research and engineering practices, and high technical standards.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Have experience with Department of Defense, Navy, and industrial research funding activities.
  • Be currently eligible for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successfully complete required background checks and a pre-employment drug screen.
Responsibilities
  • Lead 50 scientists and engineers across four departments conducting research, development, implementation, integration, and testing of complex undersea guidance systems, including acoustic signal processing, tracking, classification, data fusion, vehicle autonomy and tactics design, and embedded real-time software implementation and testing.
  • Develop and maintain division-wide technical expertise from early development through transition to sponsors.
  • Work with Office leadership to build relationships with sponsors and stakeholders, deliver research products, and develop and execute strategic initiatives.
  • Lead proposals and projects that advance autonomous guidance systems research and expertise.
  • Provide project updates to sponsors and stakeholders and lead new-business development for potential sponsors.
  • Collaborate with engineers across the Undersea Systems Office and Applied Research Laboratory.
  • Oversee program planning, staffing, and execution to ensure divisional staff and faculty are appropriately tasked.
  • Provide high-level project management, engineering oversight, and technical expertise in acoustic signal processing, vehicle autonomy and tactics, and embedded real-time software.
  • Coordinate research and development activities across disciplines, including defining scope and identifying research problems.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain research and development engineering staff and faculty.
