About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • At least 12 years of progressive experience in the in vitro diagnostics or medical device industry is required.
  • Experience with electrochemical sensor development, reagent chemistry optimization, and microfluidics is required.
  • Experience with high-volume consumable manufacturing processes, such as injection molding and automation equipment, is required.
  • Demonstrated success bringing point-of-care diagnostics products to market is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of design controls and global regulations, including FDA Quality System Regulations, ISO 13485, IVDR, and ISO 14971 risk management, is required.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary R&D teams, develop talent, and build a culture of scientific excellence, accountability, and innovation is required.
  • Ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Marketing, and external partners is required.
  • A proactive, data-driven approach to problem solving and project management, including navigating complex technical challenges, managing ambiguity, and driving decisions with cross-functional input, is required.
  • Systems thinking and integration skills across assay chemistry, consumables engineering, hardware, and software are required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers specializing in assay chemistry and consumable development.
  • Foster scientific rigor, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement; represent the team in the Handheld Systems R&D leadership group to shape product strategy and align with business goals.
  • Own end-to-end development of next-generation blood gas assays, including test-menu expansion, and associated consumables such as test cards and sample collection devices.
  • Establish product requirements and specifications using sound science, statistical methods, and industry best practices.
  • Integrate assay chemistry and consumable design to ensure assays meet requirements in their consumable format and within the overall device system.
  • Partner with the Systems Development & Integration team to achieve hardware-software-assay interoperability and robust system performance.
  • Collaborate with the Assay Performance (Lifecycle Engineering) team on sensor calibration and data analytics, ensuring designs meet overall system performance requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership for sustaining and continuously improving on-market assays and consumables.
  • Own design changes resulting from part, material, or reagent obsolescence; conduct risk assessment and change control while maintaining product performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee robust manufacturing process development and control of Critical-to-Quality attributes in high-volume production; work with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, and Regulatory teams on scalable production, technical design transfers, and continuous supply.
  • Ensure development and sustaining activities comply with global in vitro diagnostics regulatory standards, including FDA Quality System Regulations, ISO 13485, IVDR, CLSI, and ISO 14971 risk management.
  • Maintain design history files and risk-management documentation for assays and consumables.
  • Resolve cross-functional challenges and make decisions balancing innovation speed with compliance and reliability.
  • Define and track key performance indicators, including assay performance metrics, consumable yield and cost, and project milestones, using them to drive accountability and continuous improvement in development velocity, product quality, and reliability.

Desired Qualifications

  • An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
