Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Math/Statistics, or Business.
  • At least 6 years of experience in SQL database administration and software engineering database support.
  • At least 6 years of hands-on individual-contributor experience implementing, maintaining, and operating databases using SQL in accordance with industry standards, data policies, and security best practices.
  • Expertise troubleshooting application database issues in an enterprise production environment.
  • Expertise with database performance tuning, indexing, query profiling, query optimization, monitoring, and associated tools such as SolarWinds, Datadog, RDS Database Insights, and/or Redgate.
  • Proven success designing, implementing, and maintaining backup and disaster recovery strategies and retention lifecycles in a cloud environment.
  • Experience with secure data management practices.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining relational database schemas, structures, and models to support application and pipeline performance, maintainability, and data integrity.
  • Experience partnering directly with software engineering teams throughout the application lifecycle to support data structure and data infrastructure needs.
  • Experience with peer review and collaboration on data schemas, stored procedures, and data model changes to ensure standards, data quality, performance, maintainability, and security.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience supporting ETL processes and data integrations using associated tools such as SQL Server Integration Services, AWS Glue, Informatica, or Alteryx.
  • At least 2 years of experience configuring and managing databases in the AWS cloud environment, including services such as RDS, EC2, DMS, and infrastructure as code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • At least 2 years of experience with data engineering practices incorporating AI capabilities.
  • Proven success leveraging generative AI, agent-based solutions, and automation technologies to accelerate database administration and data engineering activities.
  • Demonstrated application of generative AI, AI-powered agents, machine learning, and other AI tools to support and improve data engineering lifecycle activities, artifacts, and assets.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting, implementing, and supporting AI-enabled tools and services for cloud-based data engineering environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to participate effectively in technical and non-technical reviews as both reviewer and reviewee, including change control and pull request review.
Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, configure, maintain, and deprecate database environments, databases, data schemas, and data elements for application development and support.
  • Develop and assist with SQL query design for applications and reporting.
  • Recommend, design, implement, and maintain automation to reduce repetitive software development and maintenance tasks and improve application performance.
  • Maintain database configuration and management across non-production and production environments to ensure uptime and performance.
  • Participate in organizational code and development-practice reviews as both reviewer and reviewee.
  • Implement and maintain database backup and retention plans.
  • Determine, implement, and maintain database performance monitoring and tuning strategies.
  • Configure logging and monitoring for database and application health and performance.
  • Participate in software releases, including possible after-hours releases and updates.
  • Plan and carry out data migrations, system upgrades, and system updates.
  • Monitor ETL and other scheduled database processes and respond to failures.
  • Research and respond to alerts and notifications about actual or potential issues.
  • Research and resolve production and non-production data and database issues, including application SQL queries.
  • Ensure business continuity and disaster recovery for databases.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application and data infrastructure incidents.
  • Partner with development teams on data modeling, schema design, database design, query development and optimization, and related functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Participate in technology integration initiatives involving supported systems.
  • Participate in organizational risk assessment, security planning, and vendor analysis activities.
  • Attend recurring organizational meetings and one-on-ones with a supervisor.
  • Engage in unplanned communications and recurring HR processes.
  • Maintain awareness of industry, institutional, and organizational trends, best practices, and standard solutions.
  • Share data and database administration concepts, best practices, strategies, and conventions with technical and non-technical staff through mentoring, meetings, hands-on learning, and documentation.
  • Become familiar with research administration in an R1 university setting to streamline supporting business processes.
  • Work occasional hours outside the standard business schedule, respond to incidents, support critical deployments, and participate in on-call coverage when required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS services such as Glue, DMS, QuickSight, Redshift, and data pipelines.
  • Experience performing security audits and reviews of databases and data systems.
  • Experience with REST API development and management platforms such as MuleSoft or Boomi, with MuleSoft preferred.
  • Experience with open-source database technologies such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and Oracle.
  • Experience with information security standards and frameworks.
  • Experience working in a Scrum-Agile environment.
  • Experience with the Workday suite of applications and modules.
  • Experience with the Workday data model, security, integrations, and data-load capabilities.
