Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of healthcare-related experience, or at least 1 year of pharmacy experience, or an associate degree or completed 2 years of college, or 1 year of college experience while currently enrolled in a health science-related bachelor's or higher degree program, or certification as a dietetic technician registered or certified pharmacy technician, or 1 year as a Nutrition and Formula Center Technician for Food and Nutrition Services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated computer experience.
  • Ability to perform necessary math skills and understand and calculate weights and measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate functions and document in the electronic medical record.
  • Active certification from a nationally accredited infant formula technician certification program within 12 months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and deliver human milk and infant or pediatric formula and transfer information concerning patient formula orders.
  • Provide direction and support to Human Milk and Formula Technicians and assist with department operations.
  • Adhere to food safety and sanitation regulations and standards established by the hospital and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure the safe and effective operation of equipment used to prepare infant and pediatric feedings and maintain sanitation in the preparation room.
  • Process human milk and formula orders and maintain temperature records.
  • Perform required quality assurance monitoring activities.
  • Follow department policy and partner with nursing staff and providers to ensure feeds are prepared correctly.
  • Train new employees and monitor the quality and quantity of work performed in the department.
  • Process or dispense human milk and formula orders through the computer system, including data entry where applicable.
  • Prepare orders according to recipes or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist instruction by obtaining the correct products, determining doses, measuring solids and liquids, packaging and labeling products, completing logs, performing required barcode scan confirmations, and obtaining formulas from ancillary areas when needed.
  • Report discrepancies in feeding orders to the supervisor or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and follow food safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Operate and maintain automated systems or technology used in the human milk and formula preparation process.
  • Perform formula-area inspections, communicate immediate concerns, monitor inventory, stock products according to patient demand, rotate stock, check expiration dates, remove expired products, and maintain required storage conditions.
  • Oversee temperature and humidity monitoring systems where required and maintain compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Use pneumatic tube systems and hand delivery for human milk and formula transfers and complete required documentation.
  • Respond to urgent delivery requests, including deliveries to patient care areas, stocking areas, or equipment.
  • Triage phone calls and handle human milk and formula requests appropriately, deferring clinical decisions to a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
  • Communicate with supervisors, patient care areas, and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists about feeding orders, storage, or administration issues.
  • Use service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and resolve problems and communicate resolutions to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of information and data within the scope of the position and comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and in-service education programs.
  • Assist in developing goals, objectives, training plans, and training for new employees in the Human Milk and Formula Lab.
  • Act as a liaison between inpatient dietitians, nursing staff, providers, and technicians.
  • Act as the authority in the absence of the Chief Clinical Dietitian and Lab Manager, exercising judgment and tact.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Six months of customer service experience in the healthcare industry with patient interaction.
