Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Sciences, Master's Degree in Medical Sciences, or Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • Ability to work protracted or irregular hours and in environments involving biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care within the APP's scope of practice and specialty.
  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients while maintaining professional and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate medical specialty teams to develop comprehensive patient-care plans and review those plans with the clinical team.
  • Participate in directing patient care, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and coordinate disposition decisions, discharge planning, and follow-up.
  • Participate in the education of residents and medical and nursing students.
  • Complete consults and emergent evaluations.
  • Order additional tests or consults in collaboration with Dermatology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinical and hospital staff regarding abnormal evaluation findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge and disposition by coordinating services, tests, follow-up appointments, and necessary care arrangements.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum consistent with educational experience and certification.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Assist with collecting outcome measures.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual Dermatology patient needs.
  • Use clinical equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
  • Maintain and update clinical knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for Dermatology patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
  • Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, evaluations, and disposition plans clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved policies and documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in Dermatology.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in Dermatology practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education; serve as a professional role model.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret Dermatology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, access-to-care data, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist Dermatology faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Dermatology experience.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Family Nurse Practitioners are considered.
  • A master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant.
